Reminds me of something Kurt Busiek once said: If Perry White ever found out Clark's secret identity, he'd have to fire him for repeatedly hiding a conflict of interest in his reportage.
I'd say he's more devoted to journalistic integrity than that. Firing someone for hiding a conflict of interest and lying in the press isn't just a face-saving tactic for him, like it sadly would be for many real world editors, where as long as the rest of the world doesn't know, he'll gladly look the other way. He'd fire someone for doing that because HE believes its wrong.
Is Perry being a moron on purpose here? Yeah, Clark fought all manner of criminals and more substantial threats, but that was only one facet of his job, and unlike Batman, that wasn't his motivation for putting on the costume. He went around the world helping people, stopping or at least mitigating disasters, both of the natural and man-made variety. He was acting as a symbol of hope to people in need and remind them that someone actually cared about their wellbeing.
But here, Perry is acting like Clark was some kind of manipulative thug that just went around clobbering people. And shit, not only is HE doing it, but numerous characters in the DC universe.
Speaking which, from what I understand, it was Lois that outed Clark's identity to the public in a fucking Daily Planet news article, so where does Perry get off playing the victim, when He AND Lois were the ones that exposed Superman in the first fucking place?
And while I'm on the subject of ranting, what in the flaming fuck is up with Gordon's hair? At first, I thought it was suppose to be some kind of really severe military haircut, but here, it just looks like a mohawk. Isn't this guy suppose to have an adult daughter? Why does he look like he's in his mid-twenties at best?
They've all got a bad case of it. That's why Perry White is acting like he's JJ Jamison and had noooooo idea that Clark Kent was Superman. Just like Lois was toooootallly shocked to find out the truth. As opposed to in the past when they knew but could either never prove it or wink wink nudge nudge pretended they didn't know.
Is no one GRATEFUL to Superman any more? Even Perry? I can understand when he first showed up, people being suspicious. Morrison told that story for the Nu52, and Waid did it in SUPERMAN: BIRTHRIGHT. But how many times does he have to save the city for people to trust him? Waid, in another story, got it right. People believe in Superman. That's why when Brainiac took over his body and threw Superman's mind into another body, everybody believed what Supes-Brainiac said, until it was (almost) too late.
Guess it's just a case of DC writers and editors trying to write comics the Marvel way. Super heroes can't be loved or revered, they have to be misjudged and held in contempt. They even took away Superman's costume and replaced it with something gritty.
I think the only time in recent memory there was a reversal has been Starfire, where she went from Space Slut to someone fun and enjoyable to read about.
Weirdly, it seems that the only superhero the DC public are shown to consistantly like is Batman, with a lot of Snyder's post-reboot stories tying into the idea of Bruce manufacturing the role as a kind of positive folk hero to inspire the ordinary citizens...
It works in story, although it seems a wee bit too reflective of DC/WB's attitude to the character these days (Everyone loves Batman, while everyone else is inherently embarassing due to NOT being Batman).
*Sigh* I miss the days when regular people in the DCU were happy to see superheroes.
Of course they are. There's a story in Action Comics at the moment about a group of civilians celebrating and eventually helping Superman defeat an upcoming threat.
Who are mostly the police, some of whom saw Superman as creepy and a liar, even after that one member was revealed to be a shadow creature. One gets the feeling that those who celebrated his coming back in that block--are very much the minority in Metropolis right now.
The joke in the book's has been that Gordon shaved his own head, and while he was going for the high and tight look, he wound up giving himself a mohawk. Now, why on Earth the creator's decided to give him that haircut remains a mystery.
To differentiate him from him being in Commissioner mode, while giving him a look that reflects Bruce's Year Zero haircut and allowing Gordon to be more physically active, or something?
Apparently she thinks so. We're still waiting for the writers to deign to share that information with us, AFAIK. Not having the whole picture is pretty much just pissing me off.
Also, I really can't decide whose hair I hate more, Clark's or Gordon's.
also, i don;t think we can tell from these pages that Perry actually feels this way... he just said "I'm telling you the same thing i told..." which to me seems like he is protecting clark and himself.
