I am still wondering who thought this was a good idea in the first place? The coupling gave me vibes of Bruce and Barbara in the DCAU, where it just seems not even if executed correctly would I feel right about it.
I feel like the biggest problem with it for some fans, at least from what I've seen, is that Dawn was so often played up as the "little sister" of the group. Heck Willow/Tara were practically her parents during Buffy's "death." So seeing anyone, and especially Xander who's been there from day one and has an almost brother-like relationship with Buffy, hooking up with her could be, weird for certain people. And that's understandable.
Me, I've always been kind of ambivalent on it myself. I don't really know how I feel honestly.
To me Xander is in the unfortunate position of being honorary big brother (but not a brother), and also being the target of her first crush.
Her diary entry about him in the first story told from her point of view make it clear she thinks he'd the coolest guy EVER (From the POV of a thirteen year old), being so smart that he didn'tbother going to college and things like that.
I think that it's been implied. I mean Angel, Spike, Drusilla, and Darla all palled around for a number of years, and it was implied that they kind of just all slept around with each other at one point or another. I think that the idea of Angel/Spike was more subtlety implied, but it was there.
But I'd have to go back and rewatch the show in order to be certain.
But I think the closest we got in the show was in a flashback in the Angel episode "Destiny" where Angelus talks to Spike;
"Don't mistake me. I do love the ladies. It's just lately I've been wondering what it'd be like to share the slaughter of innocents with another man. Don't think that makes me some kind of a deviant, do you?"
