In the midst of the Blackest Night bruhaha and Pet Avengers, it seems everyone's ignoring that occasionally brilliant DC subsidary. Wildstorm still makes some good choices sometimes, it would seem.
This is fairly exciting news, I think. Wildstorm has been percieved as iffy since the Morrison debacle, but I've loved some of the World's End stuff they've been putting out. It's a world away from the toe in the water idea of continuity changes that the Big Two are doing, because there's literally no fast-track out of the story. And I always thought it weird that Brian Wood, writer of stuff like Demo, Supermarket and Local, would write a superhero book, but he explains all in his interview, along with Rebekah Isaacs who is supplying some great art; http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=22066
I do like some of the looks Isaac's come up with for the kids. If you read the interview, it says they went to some lengths to come up with looks that were actually viable for actual teenagers, and with a couple of exceptions, it really works. Bliss and Copycat in particular work so well, and it's a world away from the divisive work Ramos turned in over a decade ago with Ellis.

Pretty pretty pages. I think it's a cliche to have them sent back in time, as the interview suggests, but for those who are familiar with the events of Number of the Beast, I think it's safe to say we should just be glad these characters are alive. Next, some pretty, pretty covers, supplied by North 40 artist Fiona Staples.

The design work on these is absolutely impeccable. I love the idea of using space rather than filling up the entire thing, but then Wood's always seemed like someone quite aware of design and the like.
Anyway, it certainly looks promising, and I hope it increases Wildstorm's standing in the next year or so, They definitely deserve it.
BTW, if the cut for this fails massively, my apologies. Since the rule change, the super-easy-to-work-with code has gone!

Date: 2009-07-18 09:56 pm (UTC)...? The title line about "Cursed Female" doesn't help.
On a side note, is the one girl bareoot except for little straps over her arches? If so, that looks like pain waiting to happen. I hope her tetanus boosters are up to date.

Date: 2009-07-18 11:16 pm (UTC)I'll be really intruiged to read this, I've read the first volume of DV8 a couple of times, my library has it, and I quite liked it, and I liked the way they're all so very, very messed up. I very much want to read this, but only if it doesn't just become Gen13 version 2, I want them to carry on not being very nice people, or at least severely messed up.

Date: 2009-07-19 07:01 am (UTC)DV8, huh?
Date: 2009-07-19 07:25 am (UTC)Looking at this art, and reading their Wiki entry, makes me want to see a crossover between these guys and the Runaways; they both have about 8 members (or will once Gert and Xavin [oh, please!] come back), but I think it would be really interesting to contrast the two teams' similarities and differences.

Date: 2009-07-19 01:21 pm (UTC)Actually it also puts me off that they're all supposed to be teenagers. Yawn, I'm afraid.

Date: 2009-07-19 01:42 pm (UTC)How come it puts you off that they're all teens? Bear in mind this is written by Brian Wood, who, when not going on a little too much about how evil corporations and the like are and how money taints people but not the awesome rebel kid who leads his book, is generally great at this sort of thing. Is it because it's been done, already?

Date: 2009-07-19 01:50 pm (UTC)I'm just not that interested in reading about teens who don't explicitly LOOK like teens. I'd rather read about people over twenty who are given actual ages (not the weird eternalism of the x-men or suchlike). I'm kind of looking for a series that can make me aspire, and since I'm not a teenager I'd rather it was about people older than me so it's pure aspiration (or, since they're mean.. unspiration? :/) rather than 'wow they are better (/worse) than me at an earlier point in their lives, doesn't that make me suck(/feel better about myself)!'
I'm sure I could enjoy it nevertheless, but I don't have the money to spend on something that isn't giving me exactly what I want just now.
(I am also super-tired of AWESOME REBEL KIDs. THAT has been done enough for now. :3)

Date: 2009-07-20 11:21 am (UTC)I love DV8 and I'm so happy to see these characters return. I haven't bought a comic book in years but I will buy this when it comes out.

Date: 2009-07-29 01:03 pm (UTC)It was one of my favorite teams and I was pretty disappointed when they didn't reappear after the world storm event when all the dead Stormwatch members did.
Also, not dead Powerhouse! Yay!
