kingrockwell: he's a sexy (Default)
[personal profile] kingrockwell posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Again, I come to the table late and have to choose just one! Figure I should consider myself lucky I even got that much, though.
This week I bring you Walt Simonson and Brian Stelfreeze's The Demon and Catwoman!

It was either this or more Flash (though Risso's art on Batman is just lovely this week!), and we might want to save some Flashes for later. Last week was all about introductions, now we're finally getting somewhere as the ball gets rolling!

And for mods' sake, I'm gonna go ahead and keep a count of what's been posted so far:
Hawkman: 2
Superman: 1
Wonder Woman: 1
Supergirl: 1
Metal Men: 1
Flash: 1
Metamorpho: 1
The Demon and Catwoman: 1

One more spot open for this week if you want to post something from this issue!

Etrigan not rhyming makes me a sad panda.

He didn't start out rhyming. Alan Moore did that. And frankly, only he and a couple others ever managed to make it not sound forced. DCAU Etrigan never rhymed, and after his first line, it didn't bother me. Only writers who are comfortable with it should even try.

It wasn't Moore, it was... Len Wein, I believe? In a DC Comics Presents.

He did, actually. Just after he'd beaten Klarion:

Robin: What are you going to do with him?

Etrigan: Mother's grief, father's shame, now returns to whence he came.

Robin: What?

Etrigan: He's going to his room.

Over on Facebook, Walt has been commenting on how hard it's been to write Etrigan's rhymes, so I think we can expect the return of the declaiming Demon before too long.

Uh. Nobody sounds right.

Is the idea of WC to have people who have no idea how these characters sound work on them?

Is the idea of people who read WC not to realize they're out of continuity? As long as it doesn't shit on the characters . . . . let. It. Go.

I agree, but even setting that aside, I don't see how either character sounds wrong here. The Etrigan here is perfectly in-line with Kirby's.

I am not a DCU fanboy, as you're talking to me like one("Let...it...go"? Uh, it doesn't bug me as much as that), and do not give a single flying fuck about continuity, nor did I say anything about it. I am not talking about continuity. I'm looking at this as basically a casual reader with a familiarity with the characters that is fairly basic. I am saying that, to me, they don't sound right. The question is not whether they sound like any particular version. The question is whether they sound convincingly like the characters. It's not my fault they fall flat. And sound stiff.

There was a time when Moore's rhyming was new. It was weird. But he made me accept it.

i'm so glad this catwoman story is out of Gotham and out of continuity. Makes me enjoy it so much more.

We're kinda underwhelmed by it. Maybe it will improve.

So far, the Kamandi strip remains the only thing I like unreservedly in Wednesday Comics. It's funny how the strip that wears its old school homage most prominently on its sleeve should also be the least self-conscious thing in the entire book. Kamandi is being done by two guys who really understand how comic strip storytelling works, and aren't wrestling with trying to shoehorn comic book story pacing into another medium. Sorry, but to me quite a few of the other strips suffer from precisely that.

Also, picking Prince Valiant as their template was a doubly smart move, because it's a strip Kirby loved and borrowed from pretty freely himself. So it feels natural and gives a sense of a circle being closed, metaphorically speaking.

Motto. I think the Kamandi strip is wonderful (second only to Paul Popes' version of Adam Strange)

2 supergirls? I know I posted one from the DC source that was wordless? Does that count?

Hee hee, he doesn't need alarms for a thief that knocks over every other suit of armor on the way out. I like how she tiptoes out the great wooden doors as she passes the pile of iron.

I wonder what Selina smells like. Albacore? Scampi? Catnip?

Curses on me for not getting this before they sold out.
