Following the request for some upbeat What if...? stories, I submit this reposting from over 6 years ago (Good grief, I've been here a long time!!!)
The cover alone convinced me that this was likely to be an interesting alternate world! :D

At the end of the Asgardian Wars Loki gave the X-Men and New Mutants a choice, stay in Asgard and keep all that they had achieved there, all the new lives and new loves they had found, and in the case of Storm, powers returned to her, or return to Earth as they had been before they arrived; Storm would be powerless, Magma would be human instead of the elf-form the elven folk had curssed her with, and so on (The only exception he made, out ofnarrative necessity courtesy, was that Karma would NOT be returned to the grotesquely obese form her time under the control of the Shadow King had given her). The choice HAD to be unanimous though
Of course, in the mainstream MU, the choice to return to was made, but this IS a "What if...?"
8 pages out of 30, story and art by Jim Valentino...
The best What if's have a plausible turning point, and I like this one...
In this timeline Wolfsbane is the one who realises that she cannot leave behind Hrimrari the Wolf Prince, who she loves. The X-Men try to convince her otherwise, but it's her best friend Dani who is the first to stand defend her decision, against Wolverine's pointing out that they all have a say in such a choice.... It's a great moment for Dani...

Okay some selfishness there to be sure (notably in Warlock's "If I don't leave i'll DIE" and that not being an automatic deal breaker for everyone else), but that's human... (Doug staying is a little odd too, as though he CAN read any language it's not something he tended to make a study of for the sake of it (and I'm sure he'd miss video games and the like), but never mind)
Loki, of course, has a plan...

We see no more of that X-Men team, which is a shame. Warlock isn't there which makes me sad, perhaps without Doug he returned to space.

See what a fun world this was? So many great little ideas, Kurt in his element, Doug becoming the first librarian in Asgardian history and respected as such, Rogue getting a guy worthy of her (Though her being able to touch Asgardians without leeching them wasn't quite the case based on other stories, but again, we'll cope)
Things don't go well though, as with Thor still a frog on Earth, Hela leads an assault on Asgard, we're not going into much of that though, you'll need to buy the comic for that! :P
I leave this page in as someone who never much cared for the character in question, though I appreciate and respect that he has his fans.

Cypher doesn't get shot by the Ani-Mator and Sunspot meets his maker fighting Hela herself, I like this timeline.
The X-Men's involvement is pivotal, as they bring their allies to side with Asgard. Sam brings the Dwarves, Rahne brings the Wolves, Balder prevents Karnilla from killing Magik (She doesn't like the competition) and the Norns side with Asgard against Loki too. The Mighty Thor (still in "Frog of Thunder" mode) returns and fights Storm, who is being influenced by Loki for his own ends... And Dani.. she brings her sister Valkyrie, who between them have the power to destroy the now power-mad Hela, though the cost is that Dani must take on the mantle of the death goddess herself.
The war is won by Asgard, though there are more losses, most notably Hrimrari the wolf-prince, and now a new order is established, courtesy of Thor...

And now we see how the NEW Asgard lines up

So, Loki, by lies and misdirection, brings peace to Asgard, more peace than they've ever known before. As such he gets his just reward from "Those Who Sit Above in Shadow"... they keep their promise that he is made King of all Asgard... but because of the methods he chose, he is made King of Asgard at the end of all times.. as the charred ruin of long, long dead Asgard plummets towards an all destroying black hole...
Now, tell me, wouldn't YOU want to see more stories in this timeline?

And it's nice that Rogue gets an ending where she isn't stabbed to death by Sinister.
It would be intriguing to see what became of the X-Men of that 'verse...
Guessing without X-Factor, and their stupid, stupid idea of pretending to be mutant exterminators, the 80s went a bit more smoothly for the X-Men.
