He came to Isaac Newton, who'd been using that power.
He came to those who'd been fighting Newton- Doctor Strange, some other Sorcerers Supreme from across time, and the Avengers.
The Sorcerers Supreme whom he met weren't all of the ones Merlin'd gathered against the previous user(s) of the Author's work.
Two of them, the Conjuror and Yao (the young Ancient One), were at Night Nurse's.
They and she'd been stunned by a lesser manifestation- a servant of the Author's, in the body of the Conjuror's brother (who'd been one of the few parts of the Word-using gestalt Newton'd taken the power from that'd survived).

Back in Central Park, Newton joined his fellow sorcerers and the Avengers in battle against the Author.
Strange and the Vision realized something about the Author's nature, something that Howard the Duck indirectly voiced back at Night Nurse's when that one's servant revealed its master's nature.
" Alien. Just say alien.
" You dummies have been fighting an alien. "
The Conjuror pointed at the servant.
" I don't care what you are. I just want my brother back. Now. "
" Your brother was misguided. Like all the mystics who followed the so-called ' Word of God '. Each word he spoke was written onto his very bones. He is now bound to my master. "
" Who is your master, and how can I kill him and free my brother, then? "
" You cannot. "

(The triteness of " that magic is actually technology " is mitigated by the technology not being depicted in any of the conventional forms that might be expected, and " mystics " having an apparent affinity for it.)
" .. this world will melt by my master's hand. "
The Conjuror and Yao left with the bound servant (and Luke/Howard) in tow, arriving at Central Park.
The Conjuror answered the question of how they'd stop the Author: " We fight technology..

(Luke just showed up to throw Howard at the problem.)
Newton, being consumed by the Author's power, turned to his Mindful One (on whose back the Demon Rider's on above) for the Word of God that he'd stowed away in him.
The Mindful One refused.
Newton blasted him apart and took the Author's work, presenting it to him.
The Author prepared to unleash its power.
Billy Kaplan (from the Battle of the Atom future) summoned what power he could and took the scene into his cloak.

The balled-up cloak vanished, leaving the Avengers and Luke behind.
