SOLO AVENGERS #2: Hawkeye had a bad dad

I intended to post this before The Life of Captain Marvel #1.
SOLO AVENGERS #2 covers Hawkeye's origin, adding in the man who actually taught Clint Barton how to use a bow and arrow. It is written by Tom DeFalco with art by M.D. Bright.







This is Harold Barton's first appearance. More of his poor parenting can be seen in flashbacks in HAWKEYE #12 and #19.

To be fair to Tom DeFalco, "a member of the Avengers had an abusive, alcoholic parent" wasn't exactly a "thing" at this time.



Trick Shot was Clint's mentor, but turned out to be a criminal, as was the Swordsman.

Barney Barton helped the Avengers defeat Egghead in AVENGERS #64, seemingly dying in the process. He actually "stayed dead" quite a while.

Barney Barton later became the new Trick Shot. The Barton brothers fight from time to time.

It's funny... these days, if a writer had Barney feature prominently in a flashback, it'd be a sign that the dead brother was making a return. But they just used him for background, and left it at that.
