The Meek is a fantasy-drama adventure weaving together multiple characters and narratives dealing with themes of loss, grief, corruption, betrayal and judgement. Since the site was launched in 2009, the series has received critical acclaim from numerous outlets (The A.V. Club listed The Meek as one of their picks for the best comic of 2016).

As mentioned above, The Meek focuses on a variety of characters, each with their own narratives and stories that take the spotlight from time to time. This particular extract focuses on Angora, an eccentric young girl with an affinity for nature who has lost and subsequently gone to look for her 'Grandfather', whom she believes she can find in the "Centre" (wherever that may be). After a scrape with some bandits, she finds a safe place to sleep and dreams of the last time she saw him.

Well hopefully now that Mare Internum (which is also brilliant) is about to conclude the Meek will end it's hiatus. Unless Dershing picks up other projects in the meantime.

Really enjoy this series. Dershing is an incredibly humanist writer who understands the darkest and most ugly parts of ourselves. She tackles things that would be schlocky or sensationalist in the hands of a lesser writer with compassion and sensitivity. But she doesn't let that stop her writing from being raw and painful. She's also a ridiculously good artist.

I enjoy this much more than Mare Internum (which is itself fine). It has the scope of a large narrative slowly drawing together with a deep sense of tragedy as people do bad things for good reasons and good things for all kinds of reasons.

One of the major parts of Angora's early appearances is her casual nudity and lack of understanding why it would be an issue. But iirc it's also implied that she originally was being raised normally in society and at some point left the orphanage she was at to go into the wilderness, but that it's been so long she's forgotten things? I don't quite recall.
