Marvel have just announced that as part of their 80th Anniversary celebrations, they're reuniting Chris claremont and Bill Sienkiewica for a one-off "Tale from the past" of their classic New Mutants run.

Chris Claremont wrote the "New Mutants Forever" series over 10 years ago, and I think Bill Sienkiwicz has done a short story with them a while back (but it didn't have Doug in it, so I don't think it counts! :P )

A Chris Claremont story with a guest appearance by Kitty Pryde?
Well, thank goodness I was sitting down, because I never would've seen that coming.

Though if this is just a one-shot, will Claremont be able to fit in any of his usual story beats?
Will anyone be violently physically altered? Will anyone turn evil and find it enjoyable? Will there be oodles of barely-deniable but never actually confirmed romantic subtext?
Oh, the tension...

I'm mixed about that.
On the plus side, I'm a sucker for more New Mutants stuff, especially if Warlock gets some focus.
On the minus side, nostalgia is not my thing. Not that I don't enjoy reading past issues, but for the present, I'd rather see the New Mutants move forward as major players. Also I want Phasing Girl as far away as possible from Magik.

Agreed that the New Mutants should be thr respected for who they are but, as always, the 90's cartoon based team has to take precedence rather than any of the four or five generations of students since then..

Do you mind if I ask why? I always throught they were fun together, in a way Phasing Girl and Metal Tovarisch never were.

Several reasons. One is that I hate that specific ship everybody seems to push. Second is that too often, Magik is only allowed to significantly interact with her and with Metal Dude unless they are not around. Third, I'm afraid I've been soured forever on the classic X-Men.

God yes. It seems like all characters are stuck in their old interactions unless impossible. Why is it so damn hard to branch out?

As highly dubious as I am about Claremont trying to recapture the spirit of something he created nearly forty years ago (oh shit, that depresses me), I'm still unreasonably excited to see the classic New Mutants portrayed as they were back then.

Maybe it's just a reaction to everything that's been thrown at the team ever since, leading up to Rahne's death in Uncanny, but I really hope this can hit the mark.

I'm not holding my breath though.

Saw this and thought, "cool, another retro one-shot. I wonder if Simonson will be allowed to do anything interesting with the story given the constraints of the format"

Then I saw who was actually writing this.
