Ennis strikes me as a guy that has a soft spot for the folks in the trenches. He's clear-eyed in knowing that some of them can be scumbags and some of them can be heroes but most are smack dab in that wide gulf of "in-between."
Garth Ennis seems to have two major modes when it comes to his military-themed stories (which also seep into his other work, as seen in Hitman or Preacher or The Boys): hard men making hard choices, or weak men making weak choices with hard consequences...
It is in a sense peak Ennis to throw in an elegy for Vietnam as a meat grinder in a story with US military characters. Afghanistan, for the Russians. He's sympathetic to the grunts, hard on the officers, and full of contempt for the folks up on high, miles away, giving orders.
