Yeah, I hadn't even heard of this series until the first issue was posted here and the long wait after the first issue didn't help. Granted everything has been on hiatus but I'm not sure one issue is enough to grab most people's attention and remind them to come back.

I feel like this has surely come up ...

If there is a language that shouldn't be available to a human for biological reasons* then I assume Doug can still understand it ... but can he speak it? Can he talk to a lightning bug? What if he had a flashlight?

*Maybe it requires an extra tongue or spores or whatever.

It was never exactly addressed, but it would make sense Doug has to be able to perceive a written language to translate it, and has to be able to hear and replicate the sounds to communicate in an alien spoken language, and his senses and larynx are normal human.

So if the language is written in a colour humans can't see, like ultra violet, he can't see or translate it without assistance.

If aliens used a sign language and they had five arms with nine fingers apiece, he could understand it, but couldn't talk it back to them without help from one and a half team-mates, or one Warlock.

We recently saw that he could understand Rahne when she howls and barks in her wolf form, but didn't speak wolf back to her.

He could probably have a go at communicating with lightning bugs because he can see the patterns and blinks, but what do they talk about?

I have a theory he tried bee dancing back at a bee a couple of times (I mean, his original New Mutants outfit is nicely black and yellow), but stopped when he discovered Kitty had found the CCTV foorage of him trying and blackmailed him for weeks.

So he can't see new colors or hear new frequencies just because its communication? That's probably for the best, the radio signals alone would probably drive a person insane.

Look, I'm not saying its a GOOD idea to talk to non-humanoid creatures (though Aquaman, Antman, Squirrel Girl, ect seem to be doing okay with it), I'm just wondering if he COULD talk to them.

So Illyana goes for a distressingly practical suit... but keeps the inexplicable headgear.
I don't even know what the purpose of her headpiece is, or how it stays on, or why she wears it.
It's clearly not a Gwen Stacy headband--is it? Does it help keep her hair in place?

At no point has it ever been explained why she went Anime Girl.
