Sonic the Hedgehog #8 — "Silent Support"

They get through the door and a big, really cool fight scene occurs between them and Eggman’s robots that I unfortunately can’t show here because of the 1/3rd limit.









What did they find? Well, with Knuckles still leading the Resistance on the ground, Angel Island and the Master Emerald have been left totally unguarded. As we know from last issue, Metal’s got its location... and has big plans for both. And already, Knuckles senses something is terribly wrong…

Speaking of the 1/3 rule, how are these scans doing? Each issue is about 20 pages or so, and I try to shave off as much as I can from panels and pages to accommodate but I worry if I’m still posting too much, but the mods haven’t stepped in yet and I don’t know if that’s because they don’t know or if that’s because I haven’t broken anything yet.

Whisper is another great addition to the comics. I like that Sonic is so respectful of her personal space and her emotions here.

To be fair to Silver, he’s never caused the futures he’s tried to stop (beyond that one time he was tricked by the real culprit), and he’s had a decent enough track record of preventing them from coming to pass.

I like the subversion of how she’s kind of built up as this dark, cool strong and silent loner type and then that turns out she’s really just painfully shy and her powers come from bright colours (look at her snuggle with the Wisps there, she’s adorable!). I’m also a sucker for puns: Whisper? As in Wisp? And she’s a Wisp whisperer? And she’s also a literal lone wolf?

I also love the opposites attract energy that she and Tangle share together in the series :)

Hm, I hadn't read back to this issue after my initial read through. Silver's recap just makes so much sense now.

Eggman just does NOT think these plans through. He thinks THIS is a fail safe?

This is something that this series makes canon about the video game Eggman

The reason he fails is that he DOESN'T think his plans through

He's got a genius IQ but all the patience of a man who thinks the time it takes to microwave a burrito is too long to wait

He comes up with an idea like "Let's free a chaos monster from a sacred gem" or "Let's make an alliance with a top secret weapon my crazy grandfather built" and then never plans through how it will go he just wings it

He also jumps to conclusions. Like thinking that just because he's the one who released Chaos, it would obey him. BUT...in the event that Chaos DID betray him, he invented another Egg Carrier to put it down. The very thing he said pales compared to the power of Chaos.

And in fairness, Eggman really couldn't have seen the second one coming. Who would suspect that putting in the power supplies in the cannon would cause the entire station to crash into the planet? That's some brilliant planning. Because anyone who would put the chaos emeralds in there would be proof that mankind should be destroyed in his mind.

Sidenote but holy shit the last act of Sonic Adventure 2 is really really dark for a Sonic game?

The reveal is that the millitary murdered a child and one of her relatives went insane with grief and decided that all humanity should die

That's BLEAK for a series that's about a wise cracking blue hedgehog and his fluffy talking animal pals fighting robots and collecting magic gems that didn't even allow anything stronger than the word "Damn" to be used in the dialogue

Not just the child, but everyone on the station was killed. Wholesale murder and government cover up in a Sonic game. And the recording that plays of Gerald Robotnik is just prior to him being executed.

They didn't even use "damn" until "Shadow the Hedgehog" and that was clearly done just to drive home how "dark and edgy" it was.

Also revealed that when he was little all Eggman wanted was to be a scientist that helped people like the grandfather he idolised and saw as a hero

I think the personality he showed when he had amnesia in this series reflected who he was before he became so maniacal and villainous. It's who he would have been if his grandfather hadn't been through all that tragedy and then been killed ;-;

Adventure: Eggman was going to blow up a city out of revenge for losing his Egg Carrier. E-102 Gamma is haunted by Eggman’s treatment of his brothers and goes on a one-man mission to “free” them by destroying them to release the animals trapped within, and when he’s been fatally damaged he opts to let himself die instead of repairing himself so the animal trapped within him can be free as well. Centuries ago, the ancient Echidnas massacred the Chao on Angel Island in their greed to use the Master Emerald, causing Chaos to lose its heart and drown them all in its unquenchable rage.

Adventure 2: See above.

Battle (GBA): The adorable robot buddy you spend the whole game playing with and getting attached to goes mad with power, loses their sentience and has to be put down and the game ends with everyone crying as Tails laments the futility of evil and violence.

06: The world is destroyed in Armageddon because of the cruel experiments performed on a living candle over a grieving father who wanted to bring his wife back to life for his daughter’s sake. Also Sonic is stabbed through the back and ####ing dies.

and the Black Knight: Sonic saves a man from committing suicide. The main antagonist is a massive thanatophobe who has seen the end of the storybook and works to create a world where nothing ever dies because nothing can ever move forward either no matter who gets hurt in the process, and the game ends with Sonic saying nothing lasts forever, everything ends eventually and what truly matters is how we spend the time we do have.

Lost World: Sonic’s impulsiveness causes the situation to go from bad to worse as the Deadly Six slowly take everything he holds dear away from him - his home, his friends, even his archenemy - until he’s left all alone.
