The arrogance of those two blow my mind. To taunt a man that can smash their puny skulls to chunky jam with a clap of his hands just because they have money and influence? Money and influence can't stop a charging bull.
They're making the mistake of assuming Fisk will gladly accept any aide for more personal power, not getting the growth he's had as mayor and with Mary. And, like far too many before them, seriously underestimating how ruthless he can be.
It's a daring idea, Fisk realizing that power doesn't matter as much to him and a quiet life. Sadly, fully expect a couple of years, he's back in control in New York and brushing off his "moment of weakness."
Yeah, it's hardly the first time Fisk has "realized" that power doesn't mean anything compared to happiness or whatever. I suspect Mary will slip into a new personality that wants nothing to do with Fisk and his life just collapses from there. So he goes back to New York.
Well, they DID have guards, but the dude with the pistol chose to charge into skull-crushing range before firing. It's not like Fisk is a small target, guys.
Mind you, the only way to kill Fisk with a gun is with a headshot, or heavy artillery of the sort used to kill elephants and rhinos. I'm pretty sure his sheer bulk would protect him against casual body shots and the like. I think it's been tried before. And hell, Fisk -practices regularly- in how to defend against stuff like this. Those mooks were fucked just being in the same room as him.
I remember scenes in early comics where he'd mop the floor with half a dozen of Taskmaster's less-than-brightest just to start the day...
It would have to be a close ranged headshot to boot. Lord knows he's been shot in the face before. It just blinded him temporarily. And while blinded, he got stabbed by a group of his supposed employees. And Fisk still wouldn't die.
To be fair, the assassination of Rasputin in real life was embellished on purpose , not only for political, but also monetary reasons, at least in certain participants cases after the fact. It's a lot easier to sell your act of murder as being necessary because the man was too dangerous to let live and just wouldn't die.
"Clearly, he may have conspired with dark forces and was influencing the Tsarita and the Tsar to troubling ends, we had to kill him, honestly and the fact he was so tough bears this truth out," being the general story woven after the fact, and makes for better story to spin than "we shot him a few times.
Of course, the supervillainization of Rasputin since then has taken hold because of the embellishment. He's become involved in secret orders dedicated to controlling the world/prolonging or starting the Great War, or become some evil wizard bent on bringing about the end times or hanging around with a snarky white bat and trying to kill the last Romanov.
This of course ignores the long series of political missteps and social issues that brought about the end of Imperial Russia, such as Russia getting involved in two costly wars within a decade, autocratic rule and repression only begetting resistance, financial instability, and a Tsar and Tsarita who seemed to live in a world apart from the country they actually ruled, to name a few issues.
That guy has to be one of the worst henchmen ever. While he's getting his head caved in he's accidentally shooting one of the people he's there to protect.
I'd count it as a badass move on Fisk's part if he had grabbed the arm with his other hand and directed the shot but it looks like that was an accident.
I dunno, the idea that a self-serving criminal business with a shady past in New York City could successfully become President of the United States seems a little far-fetched. Especially one who's just, you know, constantly committing crimes, in full view of the public. That's just wacky comic book logic right there!
Or a former NYC mayor with mob connections trying to brand himself as tough on crime while openly breaking the law in the name of some people known for shady land deals.
So do they confirm that these two assholes are dead.
Actually ... did they ever confirm Butch killed Izzy? I'm still not sure if the scene was staged that way to spare the reader some gore or if that scene was a fake-out.
Anyway I hope Wilson and Mary enjoy their vacation. it's framed as a retirement but ... c'mon.
Wilson's tendency to make terrible self-destructive decisions despite being super competent on paper is what makes him such a great counterpart to Matt.
They don't look distinguishable enough to be kept alive for story purposes, they seem like just all the other wealthy corporate puppetmasters presumed to be operating in the shadows.
I wouldn't expect them to come back if the series were changing hands but DD is coming back soon with the same creative team so its possible that part of the story isn't over.
