Am I the only one feeling like the Saga magic just isn't there anymore? I was obsessed with the series right up until the long hiatus. When it came back, it was still good, but I didn't feel that same excitement for reading it. I can't put my finger on it.
Don't get me wrong. Staples' art is still top notch and I'm curious to see where the story goes, but there's just something about it that doesn't feel the same anymore.
It's kind of directionless. "Doing random shit to stay alive" is all well and good, but it really doesn't seem like there's an end goal, like the saga is leading anywhere.
The "How I Met Your Mother" problem: supposedly this is all being told by an adult Hazel many years down the line. Is there an ending in sight? Is this all leading up to a payoff? Is that payoff going to be "then the war ended, and we all remember the dead fondly", or "then the war kept going, and I'm still part of it, and life is just shitty all the time but at least you can have fun for like 5 minutes if you squint", or......???
Hazel will either be the queen that unites the two warring factions, or telling her story to someone prior to being executed for being an abomination by one side or the other. No room for a middle ground at this point, really!
The magic isn't just in the comic; it's in you, and in your relationship with the comic. Hardly anything feels the same after a long time away from it.
