Greetings people of scans_daily! I loved Billionaire Island, and when I ran into writer Mark Russell in ECCC 2021, I told him so and geeked out with him over it at his booth (he's really nice!). Imagine how excited I was when he told me he was writing a sequel to Billionaire Island that just came out this month. Welcome to...

Billionaire Island: Cult of Dogs

The synopsis:

BILLIONAIRE ISLAND: CULT OF DOGS takes place two years after the collapse of Billionaire Island. The global economy is in ruins, the president has resigned in disgrace and fled to live abroad, and our heroes continue to search for answers, using the tools they've spent their lives crafting: Trent continues to hunt down the surviving billionaires in the US, and Shelly covers the new "model cities" that may give humanity a hope of surviving the devastation to come. In this brave new world some Americans have used the sudden absence of the billionaire class to begin building cities to withstand the growing climate devastation, while others invest their hopes for survival in a new cult, centered around a very familiar canine...But who's the man behind the dog?

Let's see what happened since the first volume... )

#2'd ended on them realizing that their client's stolen property, silver bullets cast from Judas Iscariot's thirty-piece payout, had been taken by vampires.

Off they went, " Strummer " the werewolf and Ben the son-of-a-djinn, in Los Angeles - to a vampire bar.

A fight broke out there, one defused by the arrival of " Chad. Todd.

" Or should I say, Dosferatu. "

" I'm working for Rainsford Black. " continued Strummer to the two vampire bosses.

" Black, huh? Is this about his magic bullets? "

Strummer's internal monologue turned on another track. )

#1'd ended on that prospect, one Rainsford Black, posing them a job.

#2 had them - Strummer and Ben, werewolf and djinn, private investigators - at his mansion, discussing the thirty special silver bullets that'd been stolen from Black.

While Ben chatted with Aster, one of Black's associates, Strummer talked with Black (who was accompanied by another associate, Galatea).

The conversation turned to the personal curiosity Strummer had about the case.

Specifically, about the bullets involved. )

"Everyone talks about “cancel culture,” but I don’t think anyone agrees about what “cancel culture” really means. Was Louis CK cancelled, for instance? He lost a lot of his audience when the New York Times wrote a story surfacing his past behavior toward nonconsenting women. But he’s still doing comedy gigs and podcasting and, presumably, making money. He’s just not making as much money or speaking to as big an audience as before. So was he cancelled or did he just face consequences? There’s a lot of hypocrisy and sanctimony in the air around cancel culture, especially as it pertains to comedy, and that makes it a ripe target for satire."

Issue #1 opens with the werewolf, " Strummer ", recovering from having been shot with a silver bullet.

Her assistant, Ben the djinn, picked up the case she was working - and, with his abilities, got what they need to close it.

He then used his abilities to find and confront the man who'd pulled the trigger on Strummer.

That man went for his gun - and had it forced back into his leg as he was pulling the trigger.

The bullet went in. )

"I’ve been writing professionally on the internet since the heyday of blog culture—so, 2006, 2007. And I’ve always had a sick fascination with trolls and the way that people are activated and radicalized by online communities. And in the last fifteen years, as internet culture has moved onto social media, that sickness has only accelerated. Like many Comics Beat readers, I’ve watched comics fans my age and demographic—white, middle-aged men—tip over into racist, sexist, and even fascist ideologies.

Writing is how I figure things out, and so I created Snelson as a thought experiment: What if, like many of my former high school classmates on Facebook, I believed I had peaked in the 1990s? What if my nostalgia for a perfect past that never actually existed caused me to hate the modern world? Once that frame was in mind, Snelson basically popped up, fully formed: A stand-up comedian who almost hit it big in the 1990s but who has spent the last 25 years on the downward slope of fame. Rather than accept his failures and try to grow, Snelson has decided to blame everyone else for his self-sabotage.

It is a huge challenge to write an unlikable lead. Like I said, I wanted to understand how someone becomes an embittered troll—but I absolutely do not want to make trolls sympathetic. Snelson is not the hero of this book, and I have a huge responsibility to ensure that I don’t glamorize him or endorse his beliefs in any way. If a reader were to send me an email saying “Snelson is my hero,” in the way that some misanthropic fans have unironically embraced The Joker or Thanos or Walter White as heroes, I would feel like I failed at my job."

"We’ve seen characters who represent the ultimate stage of human potential—Captain Comet and Warlock come to mind—but I don’t think we’ve met any who are just a little worse than the best. Imagine being so advanced only to be outclassed. I guess a lot of science fiction that dealt with humans encountering extraterrestrials would have played on that anxiety, but I haven’t seen it played as comedy in a superhero comic."

"For a while, the movie theaters were showing these hipster-produced ads that combined a few dubious factoids about the fossil fuel industry with the reassurance that much awesome progress was being made so there was really no need to worry about climate change. Around the same time, I kept seeing these articles about billionaires buying secret end-of-days bunkers in New Zealand or their own remote private islands, some of whom had made their billions from the fossil fuel industry. So it seemed like they were trying to pile into the lifeboats of the Titanic before the rest of us could make up our mind on whether the boat was sinking. But, in a more general sense, it’s about the inevitable result of massive economic inequality. It doesn’t take much imagination to see how letting a few people take all the world’s resources and then not spend any of it fixing the world’s problems will end in disaster for the rest of us."

- Mark Russell
