NS: Captain America: Brave New World discussion

In my opinion this film was a lot better than people are making it out to be. It’s not a great film but it’s a solid one and better than Quantumania, Ragnarok or The Marvels at least. Both Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford both gave strong performances. I’m in the minority but I also liked that they finally followed up on characters and events from The Incredible Hulk.

One minor quibble is that I think the Red Hulk would have been more effective if they kept him out of all the trailers and promotional materials. I imagine the comic fans would expect him but it might have been a bigger moment for general audiences. I get that he’s the most marketable character in the film but if No Way Home could hide Tobey and Andrew returning…

Captain America #213

With Cap recovering from injuries sustained while fighting Arnim Zola’s monsters, it falls to the Falcon to contend with the might of... Night-Flyer! Hell, yeah!

Captain America: Cold War ended in June with an Omega issue.

In the same month's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #13, the partnership of Bucky Barnes and the White Wolf'd dissolved.

The Wolf, transformed by his willing connection to Arnim Zola's Dimension Z, turned the monsters under his command into invaders of Earth.

Bucky, who'd only brought the White Wolf into his " bring down the Century Game, whose players moves' guide the world's currents " scheme because the Wolf had things he needed, confronted him.

The Wolf didn't flinch in the face of the Century Game's Revolution. )

Captain America: (Symbol of Truth/Sentinel of Liberty) #13 is inter-side conflicts.

Symbol of Truth #13's conflict is between two on the protagonist side - Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, previously caught in an explosion in Dimension Z.

The smoke of the blast'd cleared - Sharon Carter and Misty Knight were down, and Steve was pushing on, his Sentinel of Liberty #12 mindset even more so.

Sam tried to get him to " take cover and regroup " - and got a blow he had to raise his shield against.

He was shocked. )

Captain America: (Symbol of Truth/Sentinel of Liberty) #12 continue Cold War.

Cold War's the crossover between the two Cap books that began with an Alpha issue in April, where Bucky Barnes and the White Wolf'd taken control of Arnim Zola's Dimension Z.

They'd kidnapped Steve Rogers' adoptive son Ian to do so - Ian'd been fathered by Zola, and so had the material they needed in him.

Steve, Sam Wilson (who'd worked with Ian both in Symbol of Truth and 2014's All-New Captain America), Sharon Carter, and Misty Knight'd gone to Alaska to save him - where they'd been met by inhabitants of Dimension Z, coming out of portals in the liveries of the Revolution of the Century Game and the White Wolf.

Symbol of Truth #12 was largely action against those monsters - and soldiers of the Century Game's Outer Circle, who'd been wargaming amongst themselves when these other factions showed up.

That action was unremarkably engaging. )

Captain America: Cold War started in April with an Alpha issue.

Cold War's a crossover between the two currently running Cap books, Symbol of Truth and Sentinel of Liberty.

It weaves their respective plots - Sam Wilson contending with the work of the White Wolf and Steve Rogers grappling with the Century Game - together with a team-up of the Wolf and Bucky Barnes (almost certainly spun out of MCU!Bucky having " White Wolf " among his nicknames).

In Captain America: Symbol of Truth #11, the White Wolf's schemes had come to an end - he'd fought Sam Wilson and been defeated, taken into the custody of the International Criminal Court.

The Alpha issue opened on him receiving a visitor. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11 ends AIM's occupation of Lower Manhattan.

In issue #10, Roger Aubrey'd freed himself (and spearheaded the freeing of his fellow Invaders) from the clutches of the Mental Organism Designed Only for Control.

MODOC's master, the Power of the Century Game, had responded by flipping his Starpoint from " Control " to " Killing " - and MODOK had in turn killed Roger.

The resolution of the latest move in the world-spanning Century Game was now the Power and MODOK versus the Invaders - Steve Rogers going for the game player, and his comrades going for the chief pawn - in Lower Manhattan, New York City.

The Power caught Steve's shield, thrown at him. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #10 plays out in the Invaders' heads.

The Invaders here are Steve Rogers and his friends in the present day, invading Manhattan (to take it back from AIM, who'd taken it as a move in the world-encompassing Century Game).

They'd been defeated in issue #9, taken into the clutches of the Mental Organism Designed Only for Control.

That alternate self of MODOK's, a Starpoint in the Century Game - a major pawn of one of the players, in this case the Power - was looping the Invaders through torments crafted from their lives.

It was all in their heads. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #10-11 feature impassioned antagonists.

Issue #9'd ended on the entrance of Joaquín Torres, the Falcon - Sam Wilson's partner, poisoned with something by an enemy, something that'd emphasized the " vampire " in his human/bird/vampire physiology.

Joaquín, tortured by his transformation and embittered by Sam evidently abandoning him to that agony, faced Sam and the reintroduced Ian Rogers in Mohannda. Sam and Ian, who'd been battling the forces of the White Wolf, now faced the Falcon.

Captain America and the Nomad faced Joaquín. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #8-9 features the Mental Organism Designed Only for Control.

Issue #7'd ended with AIM taking Lower Manhattan in New York City. It was the next move in the world-spanning Century Game, the one that Bucky Barnes'd broken away from Steve Rogers to join, to end the way he wanted to.

Steve and friends, gathering to prevent that move, were caught off guard. Most of them (excepting Hawkeye and Black Widow, who either couldn't be claimed for multiple issues of a Captain America story or just weren't) were diverted to Baxter Springs, Kansas.

AIM's beekeepers went about their work in issue #8 as if no one'd even tried to forestall them.

They were enthusiastic. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth's brought back Ian Rogers.

It's brought back the character introduced in the Marvel NOW! Captain America relaunch back in 2012, the one last seen in the pre-Secret Wars All-New Captain America (and the Secret Wars mini Hail Hydra).

The first arc of Symbol of Truth'd had Sam working with Joaquín Torres, the Falcon introduced in the post-Secret Wars Captain America: Sam Wilson. The two of them'd grappled with a wide-spanning scheme, foiled a bioterrorist plot being set up in Wakanda - and dealt with the consequences of that.

The second arc, starting in issue #6, followed on the heels of that - it had Sam and Joaquín in New York, where the prime minister of Mohannda (geographical neighbor of Wakanda, introduced in the 90s Marvel UK series Black Axe) was asking for aid at the United Nations in her plans of reform.

Afterwards, Sam was walking the prime minister out, checking in with Joaquín: " Falcon. Sitrep. "

" All friendlies as far as I can see. Crowd's been checked too. "

Sam was uneasy. )

Captain America and the Winter Soldier Special #1 precedes Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #7.

It's the bridge between that and issue #6 from November 2022 - which'd ended on Bucky Barnes becoming one of the Century Game's five players, the second Revolution in its history.

The man he'd killed to take the role had been the first, at the Game's opening in 1922. Captain America and the Winter Soldier Special #1 opened on Bucky reviewing that moment in time.

' This is what I know. ' he thought, having reviewed the first Revolution's written record.

He knew that that man had met with another. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 and #6 are a game-changing move.

In issue #4, Steve Rogers'd recruited an ally - the Redacted, Starpoint of the Outer Circle, game-piece of the Century Game's players.

Steve, Bucky Barnes, and the Redacted were off to the Shadow Capitol - the mobile airbase of those whose moving hands rocked the world.

They were coming in from above, to jump and land below.

Their flight was courtesy of a friend from The United States of Captain America. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #5 is Sam Wilson fighting in Wakanda.

In issue #4, he'd fought Crossbones, who'd been carrying out the White Wolf's plan to commit bioterrorism in Wakanda through unwitting dupes.

Sam'd defeated the skull-masked mercenary, learned about the White Wolf having secretly laced emigrants from America with a nasty virus triggered by the presence of vibranium - and then been confronted by the Black Panther, T'Challa.

In issue #3, the Wakandan government'd taken the stance that any crime geographically tied to Wakanda fell solely in that country's jurisdiction - and that any non-Wakandan party investigating the Wakandan end of the crime in question, on Wakandan soil, would be considered as committing an incursion.

So, Sam and T'Challa fought.

Sam menaced T'Challa with birds. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 is Steve Rogers dialoging.

It doesn't immediately pick up from the end of #3 - the cliffhanger of the Redacted, agent of the world-as-their-gameboard manipulators the Outer Circle, having tracked Steve back to where he was living.

What it opened on was the unifying of Steve's investigation into the traces of the Circle's Century Game with that of Bucky Barnes.

Steve was in Bucky's apartment, thinking he was wholly revealing new information.

Bucky revealed his partial knowledge. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #4 is Sam Wilson in Wakanda.

Issue #3'd had him amongst those Americans emigrating to that country, going in plainclothes guise where Captain America and his symbol of a uniform weren't welcome.

He was going there, in defiance of the Wakandan government, to find where a particular smuggling network was getting the vibranium that moved along its edges.

He entered amongst others, moving in a crowd.

He took in everything around him. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #3 is Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes in confrontations.

Issue #2'd ended with " the Redacted " confronting Steve in Germany, and Bucky confronting Peggy Carter in Madripoor.

The parties concerned were concerned with the Century Game - a game with five players, where the world's the board and everything in it's the pieces.

Bucky and Peggy discussed what sounded like moves in that game, over an interrupted baccarat table.

It wasn't a friendly discussion. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #3 is Sam Wilson conversing.

#2'd seen him going to Latveria, on the trail of smugglers.

He'd met Wade Wilson (no relation) going after the same smugglers for a bounty there - and they'd both met Doctor Doom, who'd taken the two trespassing in his country into custody.

The ruler of Latveria questioned Captain America and Deadpool on their motives.

Captain America answered for himself. )

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #2 is subsequent moves in the Century Game.

Issue #1'd been the opener - an attack on the Fourth of July that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes'd foiled.

In the aftermath of that, both were independently investigating what lay behind the attack. Bucky was doing so without informing Steve - and Steve, without Bucky, was doing so with World War II-era friends.

They followed the same lines through which they'd learnt about that Fourth of July attack, lines that bore more fruit.

The harvest was fuller - more informative. )

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #2 is Sam and Wade Wilson in Latveria.

Issue #1'd had the former, Captain America, and his partner the Falcon foiling an attempted train robbery.

The fallout of that'd led Sam through government channels to Latveria, where Deadpool was taking questions from the state's security services.

Captain America untangled him from his quandary, and the two worked through Doctor Doom's men.

Meanwhile, the Falcon - Joaquin Torres - was talking with one of the surprising human cargo that'd been pulled out of the Super-Soldier Serum smuggling operation that'd been the target of the robbery.

He was talking to his cousin from Sonora, in an off-the-books facility she'd been taken to.

He was concerned. )
