Women of Marvel, featuring TITS

I commented on NSD earlier about Marvel's Year of Women. Part of that includes the two part Women of Marvel series, collecting stories previously published on Marvel.com

The cover's got its stars in burlesque gear and inside... it's got tits.




Uhhh... a pinup? By Greg Land? Why not just pay the strippers to wear the costumes themselves?

And then Black Cat's tits fight the tits of Satan's Daughter.




I'll probably give this one a miss.

Though I will say that the Enchantress does do rather well out of these Marvel women stories. I've not seen her in continuity much, but this year, she's been dotted around in lots of different places.

I don't get the negativity. Men have so many things women don't have (strength, brains, intelligence, opinions, ambition) that's it's great Marvel produces something that focuses on that one (two, ha!) thing that women have and men don't but want. If there's anything else on those panels, I didn't notice it, because, you know, I was focused on something else.

The last panel though, babies want out and nothing can stop them (not like there's a lot to stop them in a first place). The next panel is filled with "pop" and freeeeeeeeedooooooooooooooom!

And it's not like the male superheroes aren't all sexy and stuff too (I mean if you're a girl - no homo). Some of them have muscles and wear skin-tight outfits. That's basically the same thing isn't it?

This is from the collected volume? Because that was solicited with the Greg Land art on the cover. If it's been relegated to the inside and a new cover put in place, that might actually be progress (barely). If not and that crap's still on the cover... Depressing.

Give Land his due, it takes some sort of skill to be able to draw beautiful, pneumatic woman and still render them as displaying all the lively, zestful animation of department store mannequins.

Imagine the same image, character for character, drawn by, say, Alan Davis, the pulchritude would still be there, but dammit, at least they'd look like they were ALIVE

Though I've got to say, complaints of sexism and gratuitous cheesecake are blunted somewhat by the fact that this was drawn by a woman. Perhaps she was going for an Amanda Conner style, but missed.

Well, these comics aren't being marketed to or for women. Which I think is a pity, because it would be great if they were. But I get lots of eye candy in other comics, so I can afford to shrug and skip these.

It's too bad, though, since there are characters I'd like to read about. Seems to me they could put out a comic about women with superpowers that pleases everyone?

Pffft... Little bit of color nothing. If I was wearing that shirt, I know for a fact that *everything* would be visible, nicely framed by the corners of the square neckline. Who the hell makes a square neckline that low?

Um... with a shirt that low, how are Felicia's nipples not visible? Square necklines were never meant to go so far down; v-necks, perhaps, but that still leaves fabric on the sides. Also, the art of Land's pin-up looks... off, somehow. The link to the cover... well, at least the cover is nicely drawn (somehow, it looks more tasteful than Land's page, even though I'm reasonably sure more skin is being shown, possibly because they actually look alive on the cover, unlike the pin-up, and their facial expressions look more having fun and being playful than fake smile and attempted sexy pout).

I'm pretty sure the only people who say that have never actually seen a sexualised image of a man. That's my only explanation. I have never, ever seen a group of male characters drawn in a way equivalent to this in any mainstream superhero comic. And dammit, I've been paying attention.

I remember when Women of Marvel was first announced, and I said it was a cheap marketing ploy that would only exploit womn like a pinup calender, and I got shot down for being too cynical because the first issues published had a omwan writer and a female team.
