It's a story that'd stand on its own without the use of familiar characters and also one where that use isn't perfunctory or gratuitious.
It's a spinoff of the supertitular Elseworlds, one that acknowledges the connection in only a caption. It's set in Jarnlund, islands blighted by the subtitular condition for twenty-one years.
Issue #1 opens on Vandar Adg of the Vandal clan (sometimes called " Savage ") taking Svartfjell with the help of the mercenary Slade.
After that, Slade wanted his pay and to go.
" So swift to depart? " asked Vandar. " After so many years away? "

(Slade still kills - just not indiscriminately.)

(" Allwinter " is constant snow.)

Coin changed hands and Slade was off.

(The " loss of color " is a little more than " forever winter means there's grey slush everywhere. ")

After a bit where Slade got one up on Caitlin, they arrived at Dødsrev.

They leapt at the cloaked below - Caitlin with the power that had her called " Killer Frost " and Slade with the skill that had him called " Deathstroke ".

Caitlin sent an ice shaft into Adeline's shoulder - and Slade sent an axe into Caitlin's shoulder.

" Vandar will h-have your head for this betrayal! "

" Now get yourself gone, Caitlin. "
She and Vandar's others left, leaving Slade with Adeline and Alec - Alec whom Caitlin'd identified as " the beast ".

' Black blood on his skin. '

(His name is Alec, he's framed as opposite to Allwinter, the temple he's found in is a place where " they still remember the [G]reen ", and that fur on him looks like moss.
He's not a complete replacement for Jericho - Slade's kids are in this. Issue #2 mentions " Joseph and Grant " and features Rose.
This is almost 8 of 24 pages from the main story of July 2024's issue #1 - there's a backup story that's unrelated to this.
Writing's fantasy author Jay Kristoff, art's Tirso, and letters're Wes Abbott.
Publisher's DC.)
