flidgetjerome: Hark, a Vagrant #328 (Default)
[personal profile] flidgetjerome posting in [community profile] scans_daily
We're doing Atrocious Fashion Week now? Man, if we're doing Atrocious Fashion Week there's one person who absolutely must have a post. Or several.

The Queen of "Oh Honey No" moments herself, Ms Janet van Dyne.

It's tragic enough when she's just dressing herself but when she gets her hands on someone else's wardrobe . . .

And then the Masters of Evil get into a throw-down at the Avengers Mansion because Whirlwind decided he'd much rather stalk Jan than stick to whatever they're actually supposed to be doing.

And one more page, just so you can get a good look at what Jan herself decided to wear.

(Roughly four pages from Avengers 222)

"She-Hulk?! Is that you?!"

How many green female superheroes were running around when this was published?

I love how everyone keeps complimenting the outfit like it's the most gorgeous thing they've ever seen.

Well, Marvel characters rip on the Spidey costume, too, and nobody bats an eye at Thor. Fashion appears to work differently there.

Neither of those guys has changed costumes very much over the years, though. That's the key, really. A bad look becomes a good look when people accept that it's not going anywhere. :)

Anyway, I love Jen and Jan's looks just for the sentimental value. And the colors are nice.

Well, it is for me. That's one of the first Avengers books I ever bought. :)

Also, I think Jan's purple/pink look is sweet. The entire board can laugh at me. I don't care. :p

Well, I have to go buy some Ensure with my retirement check and then sit in the park feeding the pigeons for a coupla' hours. But we'll talk later, Kid. I'm sure. :D

I think the outfit has merit. Tone it down to some neutral earth tones - Creme top, chocolate pants, beige jacket, strand of pearls (longer than the one she's wearing), and matching russet leather belt and heeled boots, and we're in business.

...I'm a Southern California girl...

Comic book "costumers" have always had an aversion to earth tones, though. Either because the original superheroes were so primary-oriented, or because of printing/paper issues. Maybe both. Heck, Jan is rare enough in the pantheon just by dint of having brown hair in a universe that's 95% black/blond/red.

I assumed that Janet had blackmailed them into that, with the threat of doing the same to THEIR wardrobes if they didn't.

I think Scorpion would have pretty good odds of getting a case against Spider-Man through the courts for that brain damage Spidey's recurring beatings have caused him.

Can take on Thor, indeed.

Does anyone else kinda snorlfe at the thought of Tony chillaxing around the mansion in his multimillion-dollar super-armor? How does he go to the bathroom?

And Jan, really, you have to think up better excuses for getting Shulkie into her underwear (Freudian slip alert: your underwear. It works on so many levels!).

Well, they only just met. Jan is smart to get the lame excuses out of the way early, when Jen will still fall for them - she gets more mileage out of the good ones that way.

Personally, I really liked Jan's reaction to it. Dating a mostly-casual acquaintance and sometimes backer of the team? Yeah, sure, why not? They move in the same social circles after all. Finding out after you've started dating that he's actually the long-term combat bro of your former husband and you? Okay, back up.

Sidenote: Considering the costumes superheroines usually wear, should the Scorpion really be so surprised at She-Hulk in her underwear? Next to Emma Frost, she looks like she's in a prom dress.

Oooh. Whoever monitors the Avenger Mansion's secret cameras probably made a small fortune selling the tape of She-Hulk stripping down to her undies. :3

Still, nice to see Thor's stand-in get some screen-time.

Considert the following:
Comics in the 1970's-80's
Runway Fasions in general: http://www.londonfashionweek.co.uk/ (I present the London Fashion Week website)

It's all pretty run of the mill and appropriate for a high end runway fashion designer.

::made the mistake of clicking the link:: What the fuck is that fur (faux fur? I can't tell, but either way, it looks bad) and ribcage pattern thing one of the models is wearing on the dudes page?

Anyway, I'm always most amused whenever Perez is handling Jan. I can't remember where the interview was, but he said he loved doing issues with her in them because it gave him an excuse to make up as many costumes as he damn well pleased without having to worry about who was going to wear them.

Oh Jan, honey, what did you do with the other half of your pants?
That said, the suit she puts Shulkie in is kinda sensible, if very of-the-time. the pants, again, are something else, but in the opposite direction from Jan's uniform. Allows for a lot of movement, at least.

I don't mind the art, mostly(that little light-bling on Thor's helmet is sort of funny), but it looks like the inker (Bob Layton, maybe?) just looked at the note on the pencils that said "Make this lacy", shrugged, and just sort of scribbled all over it.
