I can't really put the racism aside, sadly. To paraphrase EIP, the effects are decent, but it doesn't look like a good play. Just the few lines from the trailer sound badly acted and cheesetastic (Well, not Patel's and whoever is playing "ee-roh", but "Ohng" and Katara? Eeesh.) Katara in particular from all the reviews sounds like her acting is going to be well...not great, and she's going to be constantly tearbending. Considering M Nights whole DEAL for making Katara a white chick was how great she was, I'ma dissapoint. Not only is their racefail, it sounds like there's genderfail too (Katara doesn't even get to waterbend Aang out of his ice cage or inspire the earthbenders)

On top of that, I notice how the trailer gives nothing about the plot and very few lines from the actors and totally focuses on the effects. It's all "Chosen one! Save the World! Generic Catchphrases!" I can't help to feel there's a reason we haven't heard many lines from the characters or even their names (which are pronounced all weird to make them sound more "asian"- despite the fact NONE OF THEM ARE ASIAN ANYMORE) or any of the plot- it ain't a good prognosis.

A part of me DOES want to see this movie- I'm usually okay with adaptions. But I really can't. I can't stand to see these characters butchered so much their names are even unrecognizable, I can't stand to see WhiteandWeepy!Katara, or TwilightwithaTan!Soh-ka or WhiteandApparentlyHasaWeirdVoice!Ooohnnng. Even the awesome CGI bending shown in this trailer- you don't see any of the martial arts influence from the show. Just random pointing and thrusting (and Iroh's wrists are on fire, WTF).

I'm just going to have myself a marathon rewatch of the cartoon the day this comes out. I think I'll be happy with that.

Oh well. At least the mini-series they original series' creators are making should dull the pain somewhat.

They've been hiring auditioning for character designers etc. all over. :)

I know, I'm very excited. I hope it's Zuko findin his Mama. Actually, anything would be fine. It would be great if SOMEthing good could come out of this movie.

Haha, yeah, even without watching the trailer or bringing in any question of acting or story, "racism" and "awesome" are kind of mutually exclusive concepts. That's like, "clouds aside, it's a perfectly clear day" or "the rock concert aside, it's really quiet here."

It's okay, E-bot. I got what you meant, it was just questionable phrasing. The effects do look cool (and honestly, it wasn't something I thought they would be able to pull off), it makes me ache to think how cool this COULD that been

What kills me is that the statement is exactly right. The trailer looks incredibly awesome right up until you see the actors and it's like "well here's these two characters who are supposed to be residents of the north pole, except that they are white people for some unimaginable reason." It just jolts me right out of my involvement in the story they're trying to portray.

No, I got what you meant. And certainly, something can be problematic and still be overall awesome - otherwise basically nothing would be enjoyable ever. I'm just saying, from where I'm sitting, the race!fail in this project is so deep and so fundamental that no amount of good CGI will be able to excite or interest me.

The effects are cool, but the acting is so unfortunate.  Normally, I can at least tolerate the latter, but when tolerating that involves tolerating racist casting?  No.

Oh, and also- to continue my epic rant- I don't like the indication from the interviews that the humor is gone. Sokka is not Sokka if he is not into meat and sarcasm. Aang being SRZ BZNESS all the time is well...pretty much the ANTITHESIS of what Aang is about. It's like Anti-Aang. He wants to go penguin sledding, ya'll.

And finally, Iroh cannot be without his tea, and his good natured humor in the face of Zuko's angst. :'(.

Won't a SRZ BZNESS Aang make his doubly unique status as Avatar (and savior of the world) and the last airbender just stick out in a tacky way?

It seems to me that it was the fact that Aang himself was kind of a self effacing, fun, childlike character was what made him work. I mean, if he's played like a stern Hero, the Avatar and last airbender stuff might just come off like clichéd perks for his Hero status, rather than facts that a very human character has imposed on him and has to deal with.
