Okay, so another poster has been faithfully posting some of the many Bloodlines annuals (and a tip of the hat to [personal profile] pyrotwilight for that). Recently we saw the Flash Bloodlines annual, from the summer of 1993. As we know, many of the Bloodlines characters either were never seen again or were used very little. A few managed their own short-lived series...and with one exception they all failed to last a year or so. Many were killed off in later events as yard trash in later events, such as Infinite Crisis.

But not all of these annual characters were just thrown away. Part of it depended on the title in question. Mark Waid (smack dab in the middle of his classic Flash run) created Argus. A few months after Bloodlines, he showed up in Flash #86...not their first meeting, but their first real interaction since the annual.

This is how it went down. )

Once upon a time, it was 1989. A character named Rocket Racer, a former super criminal, had reformed, and was reappearing in the pages of Spider-Man. At the same time, in Thor, a new super team, the New Warriors, had debuted, and among their number was the character Night Thrasher.

There was something disturbingly similar about these two characters. Three somethings:

1) They were teenagers.
2) They were black (in fact, they comprised a full quarter of the black superheroes in Marvel Comics at the time.)
3) They had skateboards. (well, it was the 80s)

Dwayne MacDuffie realized something was amiss here, and decided to do something about it.

Namely, shame Marvel.

Greetings True Believers.

The comics world was dealt a heavy blow yesterday. Dwayne McDuffie passed away.

In honor of him and at the request of others, I'm posting some of my favorites from his body of work. Scans from the Beyond! mini-series.

As usual, we have a number of announcements.

1. Open Account Creation Week on DreamWidth
From this DW News Post (02/10):
[W]e're going to try a little experiment. For the week of February 21 - February 28, creating an account on Dreamwidth will not require an invite code. You'll be able to register an account without needing a code -- just by visiting the account creation page.

We'll keep an eye on the results of the experiment for two factors: whether the growth is sustainable at the level we experience, and whether spam and abuse incidents rise after the open creation period. If we don't see any ill effects, we'll designate one week per quarter (and perhaps even one week per month) as an open account creation period, where no code will be required. (And if it doesn't go well, we'll let you know that it didn't, and we won't repeat the experiment.)

This will, we hope, combine the best of both worlds: allow us to keep control of the growth to prevent it from getting beyond our ability to support it and keep the spam and abuse curbed, while still allowing people who can't find an invite elsewhere a chance to experience DW.

As always, invite codes can be acquired at [site community profile] dw_codesharing, or by contacting the mods at dailyscans[AT]gmail[dot]com.

2. Community Ownership on LJ
From this LJ News Post (02/03):
In order to improve community management, LiveJournal is introducing the role of 'owner' for communities. The owner of a community is the only maintainer who will have the authority to remove other maintainers, rename the community, or delete the community. Over the next few days, community owners will be determined. In most cases, the user who created the community will be the community owner. For communities created after today, the user who creates the community will automatically be the owner of the community.

As the longest serving active mod [livejournal.com profile] schmevil has been designated as the community owner. The owner FAQ is here.

3. Community Calendar Nominations Closing
Nominations for the Community Calendar will be closing on February 28th so that [personal profile] angelophile can work on the graphical element. You can nominate a celebration real or imaginary here (DW) (LJ).

4. Delicious tag archive and on-comm tagging
Since the news that Yahoo would be abandoning Delicious, the mod team has been mulling our options. There is a possibility that Delicious will be bought or taken up by some other company or collective, but as of writing this, there is nothing solid on this front. As it stands we see our options as this:
1. Abandon Delicious in favour of on comm tagging.
2. Seek a Delicious alternative. This will require an infusion of fresh volunteers.
3. Something brilliant which you will suggest. We need your input on this issue!

5. Black History Week
Black History Month, observed throughout the month of February in America and Canada*, is a time to remember and celebrate black culture all over the world, and the history of the African Diaspora. February 22-28 will be Black History Week on Scans_Daily to spotlight black creators, editors, journalists and bloggers, characters and stories. Institutionalized racism must be challenged, and diversity promoted everyday, but we thought a theme week spotlighting beloved creators and characters would be a fun way to end the month. Black history is every day, every week, every month.
* Black History Month is observed in October in the UK.

6. Dwayne McDuffie Tribute
It is particularly heartbreaking that today news of Dwayne McDuffie's death broke - a writer, editor and Milestone co-founder who did so much to promote multiculturalism and diversity of all kinds within the comics industry and beyond. We would like to take this opportunity to pass on condolences to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

Posts have already started appearing on the comm, but we'd like to further encourage members to share their memories of Dwayne and to celebrate his work as our tribute to him.

The mod team can be reached at dailyscans AT gmail DOT com. Don’t hesitate to contact us with questions, concerns or suggestions!

Breaking news from Newsarama

Writer Dwayne McDuffie, famous for his creation of Milestone and runs on Justice League in both comics & animation, has passed away. No cause of death or exact details have been released, but the creator's death has been confirmed by multiple independent sources.

Addendum:
Apparently Mr McDuffie died from complications due to a surgical procedure performed on Monday evening.

What details there are under the cut )

May I suggest that some selected posted from his many, many works might be a nice tribute?

And for those more creatively inclined, Project Rooftop has announced a special week in honour of Mr McDuffie where anyone can submit redesigns for perhaps his most high profile creation; Virgil "Static" Hawkins. Details can be found here (other McDuffie characters are also eligible if you so wish)

I posted this a couple of times on the past incarnations of Scans_Daily, and I thought now would be a good time to post it again. If you're familiar with the story, you probably know why. If not, read on...

I've posted a few pieces from Chew already, with some success and a lot of indifference.

Here's a straightforward scene from #2 of Chew, available in the Taster's Choice tpb
