If Volume One was broadly Quatermass-influenced, and Volume Two was broadly Holmesian, then Volume Three is our classic Doctor Who story. Which isn’t, you know, a pure thing, because Who has always had elements of both Quatermass and Holmes. But, in my head, this is very definitely the Doctor Who book. And, yes, it does please me to have our ‘Doctor’ be a young black woman of colour from Ireland. -- Warren Ellis

The magical method is actually the basis of the scientific method — they were substantially the same thing until the time of Newton. And we use folkloric terms to describe our technologies — “daemon” for a program that runs in the background process, for example. Steve Jobs’ central metaphor for the iPad was “magic” — we point at a magic mirror with our finger like a wizard and things just happen. Technology is the aspiration to replicate the condition of magic. -- Warren Ellis
