I'm indebted to [personal profile] sadoeuphemist for raising this in the Off Topic Tuesday, but this seems worthy of a post of it's own.

It would seem that CB Cebulski, during his tenure as an editor for Marvel about ten years ago, used a pseudonym to write stories, in order to get around the rule not allowing Editors to also be writers.

That in and of itself is pretty dubious behaviour. It was not an infrequent practice, but was seen as being unethical and the rule was established, but it gets a little more contentious when we discover that Cebulski wrote under the name Akira Yoshida. (Who actually featured on one scans_daily post here

He wrote for other publuishers under the name, and was approached, quite innocently, by a Marvel editor. Instead of owning up, Cebulski kept the pretence going.

Under that name he wrote 12 issues of Thor: Son of Asgard (see link above) as well as miniseries for Elektra, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde minseries, and they were well received.

A lot of stories involving Japanese settings and martial arts, and Marvel made a deal out of how great it was to have a Japanese writer writing Western comics, and it only got weirder from there.

Yoshida had a life story made up, references were made to his Godxzilla memorabilia collection, people at Marvel swore they'd met Yoshida (they hadn't), had lunch with him (they had), some Senior Executives had met him (They hadn't... they'd met a Japanese translator who happened to be in the building at the time who went along with it)

When the EIC role came up, Cebulski came clean to the Senior Management, who were not best pleased, but he ended up with the job.

All in all this reads more like the plot of an office comedy than an actual thing that happened, but happen it did.

The Vulture also posted about it here

In an industry where diversity should be actively encouraged, it's disappointing (to say the least) that a white guy adopted a Japanese identity and kept on taking gigs.

Next up we have Junkrat and Roadhog! They always come in a pair.

They're wonderfully over the top junkers from an irradiated outback who hate omnics (the sentient machines of the Overwatch universe) after blowing up an omnium's (the factory in which omnics were first created) nuclear core by freedom fighters resulted in part of Australia becoming a Mad Max style wasteland.

Junkrat likes to blow things up. Roadhog likes to murder people. Together they're like the more violent version of Timon and Pumba.

You can watch their intro/background cinematic at the end of this post :D

Whose idea was it to go legit, anyway? )
