I doubt I'll find time this week to dive deep on one of my favorite webcomics of all time, Zebra Girl. It started on May 6th, 2000 with some wacky twenty-somethings screwing around with powers they couldn't comprehend and ended on June 18th 2018 with the protagonists and their world changed forever. It was a story about growing up, changing, and finding yourself. It's the work of quite nearly half the artist's lifetime, and you can watch said artist master his craft throughout the life of the comic. I will quite happily follow Joe England on to whatever he does next.

I actually posted these pages, from Dan Shive's El Goonish Shive, a couple years ago, but it's been long enough I think they're worth reposting. This sequence is one of the first I read, and remains my favourite for reasons.

In the middle of a card tournament, our hero gets distracted. )

"Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb."

Decided that of the many webcomics I'd love to share, the latest one to be added to my check-out list - and one of the MOST DAMN GORGEOUS, LIKE WOW - is the one I'll start with.

To quote from it's own website, "Grrl Power is a comic about a crazy nerdette that becomes a superheroine. Humor, action, cheesecake, beefcake, 'splosions, and maybe some drama. Possibly ninjas."

More specifically, the series focuses on neophyte super-hero and super-fan girl Sydney Scooville, called Halo, who possesses seven orbs of unknown origin that may make her the most powerful person on Earth.  She's joined ARCHERON, a military run organization partially centered around policing rogue supers.

It's very much a "everything and the kitchen sink" universe, including a main character who's part succubus, part alien, and part cyborg.

There is a lot of fan service, both male and female, but it never feels too forced.

There is also a LOT of discussion of various tropes.

Sleepless Domain
isn't my absolute favorite webcomic - that would be Order of the Stick. But, everyone's already heard of that, so let's highlight something that deserves some exposure.

The website will tell you "Sleepless Domain is a comic about an isolated city in the middle of a dangerous world filled with monsters. During the day, the city is perfectly safe. At night, however, the populace locks themselves inside as the city streets fill with monsters. The only ones who can combat these creatures are very special girls with the power to transform into Magical Girls!"

This is technically true, but also misleading. Sleepless Domain's real story is about grief, survivor's guilt, and resilience.

After the cut, I spoil the big twist that sets up the entire comic, so if you're already interested, go read the whole thing.
