Four scans from X-Men: Second Coming #2, and four from Heroic Age: Uncanny X-Men #1:  "Second Coming" ends.

"Second Coming" proper ends with an epilogue issue by the various writers that sets up where some of the titles will be going next, etc.; there are various significant vignettes (a great Hope/Magneto scene that I regret not having room for, but there you go), with the main event being Cable's funeral.  Hope provides the main eulogy here:

Later, at issue's end, there's a big bonfire at the end of the island.  Hope is watching, while Emma watches Hope (in her diamond form; she tells Scott things were a bit emotionally turbulent for a while).  Then...

That bit there is a callback to Jean/Phoenix's appearance to Emma way back in the "Sisterhood" arc.

The subsequent arc establishes that there are five new mutant signatures extant (given that M-Day was heavily motivated by the, in my opinion, false belief that the mutant population was too large, this is actually quite a clever rollout of more mutants returning).

Anyway, Heroic Age follows various characters, so it's sort of a secondary epilogue.  Hope goes to the Baxter Building for an examination from Reed, who pronounces her basically healthy (though, he notes, in need of dental work and a massive schedule of vaccinations that she never got as a child; I liked that detail).  He also asks the obvious question of who her parents were, which the X-Men don't know and seemingly never bothered to look into, and are like "duh, that's probably something worth finding out" (Hope, in particular, wants to go to Alaska to look).

Meanwhile, Cyclops goes to the Savage Land to kill some dinosaurs (I guess that's his idea of relaxation); Steve Rogers shows up.  They talk for a bit, and Steve asks where the X-Men are going to go (figuratively speaking) now.  Cyclops really doesn't know, but Steve thinks that after saving San Francisco, the X-Men are heroes.

"I know I've been sitting on my ass re: mutants for, like, ever, but..."

MU!Obama must have some Two Face-style scarring or something, given how much he avoids being scene.

The issue closes out with Cyclops talking with Hope, who isn't attending the festivities in San Francisco.  Cyclops wants her and Rogue to form a team to go look for the "five lights" on Cerebro, but Hope says she doesn't want to, and she's tired of all the expectations.  Cyclops asks what she does want, and she says she wants to find out about her family.  Cyclops ponders this for a moment, while looking at the medal.

I like to think the thing that really cinched Scott getting the Metal of Freedom was bringing some goddamn lightbulbs for Obama's side of the Oval Office.

The M-Day argument about too many mutants would have been much more powerfully made by a proportionate depowering of X-Men, but that ship has sailed.

I'm not sure I get the significance of Scott throwing the medal away, he seemed to be accepting it on behalf of the mutant population in general, and his throwing it away seems desperately disrespectful to those who died in his cause.

It struck me as a call out to Muhammad Ali's throwing away his Olympic gold medal after being refused service in a whites only restaurant.

Things I like:

Jamie McKelvie art.
Scott calling Steve "sir".
More mutants (whether repowered or new mutants, I'll take it).

Things I don't like:

Everything else.

...wow, now I can't unsee it. XD

And ditto on the love; God knows how long it's been before the X-Men got treated for the heroes and decent people they deserve to be.

And Steve Rogers showing a public declaration to support the X-Men made me smile; I wouldn't expect less from him.

Quesada better not retcon this next year...

I'm not sure if they're repowering old mutants. Just creating new ones.

Apocalypse is returning in Uncanny X-Force though, so it might happen there.

It only took 40 years, right?

I mean, I know it's a big drag to do media work, but the Fantastic Four, for example, coming out and saying, "oh, by the way, the X-Men are pretty cool, and have saved the world more than a few times" at some point in the last four decades, well that could have stopped mutants getting repeatedly massacred quite so much.

Just a thought, Reed and chums.

ah man, don't harsh it, there are some promising plotlines here.

Did anybody read the whole issue? I'm boycotting right now, but did Magneto have anything to say? Is he staying on the island? Going along with reconciliation?

Emma seeing the phoenix is a good callback, plus it ties into the only good thing from Warsong, in my opinion, which is Emma swearing eternal vengeance on the Phoenix for necessitating the death of her clone children and the de-emotioning of the remaining Cuckoos.

What about Genosha? Mutant Town?

Dare I hope we got to see Scott (and Rachel?) mourn Cable as well? He was his fraggin son!

I really like the character of Hope so far and I hope that Marvel doesn't just use her a a bodily conduit to bring Jean back (which they probably will but still...). Not to mention the fact that as a Jean/Scott fan I don't want to see Jean return while Fraction is writing Scott (aka the writer who has gone on record as saying Emma is the love of Scott's life and Jean was just a youthful love that would have de-evolved into just friendship).

Wait. Why is Deadpool there? He's not an X-Man, no matter what he claims, or what outfit he wears.

Oh right, it's Cable's "He's really dead this time, honest" funeral/memorial.

been wondering this too.

...Maybe he thinks telling Hope what baby!Cable and teen!Cacle look like would make Cable crawl back from death?
Cable and Deadpool gave me some really good time before.....just don't make him permanently dead...;_;

Me. I'm sure the Phoenix Force is quite capable of finding another redhead without needing a Grey. Having a universe-sized Power that works specifically on genetics doesn't make sense. It's like expecting Whedon's Slayer-force (based on the Phoenix-force) to be genetic.

Re: The belief that M-Day were necessary because there were too many mutants.

"Oh no, now the mutants are numerous enough to serve as an analogy to real life minorities! We must cull them to keep their situation more fantastic so we won't have to do stories that explore how minorities are treated in a realistic situation!"
