Second Coming: Chapter 14: The Future

Four scans from X-Men: Second Coming #2, and four from Heroic Age: Uncanny X-Men #1:  "Second Coming" ends.
 

"Second Coming" proper ends with an epilogue issue by the various writers that sets up where some of the titles will be going next, etc.; there are various significant vignettes (a great Hope/Magneto scene that I regret not having room for, but there you go), with the main event being Cable's funeral.  Hope provides the main eulogy here:



Later, at issue's end, there's a big bonfire at the end of the island.  Hope is watching, while Emma watches Hope (in her diamond form; she tells Scott things were a bit emotionally turbulent for a while).  Then...



That bit there is a callback to Jean/Phoenix's appearance to Emma way back in the "Sisterhood" arc.




The subsequent arc establishes that there are five new mutant signatures extant (given that M-Day was heavily motivated by the, in my opinion, false belief that the mutant population was too large, this is actually quite a clever rollout of more mutants returning).

Anyway, Heroic Age follows various characters, so it's sort of a secondary epilogue.  Hope goes to the Baxter Building for an examination from Reed, who pronounces her basically healthy (though, he notes, in need of dental work and a massive schedule of vaccinations that she never got as a child; I liked that detail).  He also asks the obvious question of who her parents were, which the X-Men don't know and seemingly never bothered to look into, and are like "duh, that's probably something worth finding out" (Hope, in particular, wants to go to Alaska to look).

Meanwhile, Cyclops goes to the Savage Land to kill some dinosaurs (I guess that's his idea of relaxation); Steve Rogers shows up.  They talk for a bit, and Steve asks where the X-Men are going to go (figuratively speaking) now.  Cyclops really doesn't know, but Steve thinks that after saving San Francisco, the X-Men are heroes.



"I know I've been sitting on my ass re: mutants for, like, ever, but..."




MU!Obama must have some Two Face-style scarring or something, given how much he avoids being scene.

The issue closes out with Cyclops talking with Hope, who isn't attending the festivities in San Francisco.  Cyclops wants her and Rogue to form a team to go look for the "five lights" on Cerebro, but Hope says she doesn't want to, and she's tired of all the expectations.  Cyclops asks what she does want, and she says she wants to find out about her family.  Cyclops ponders this for a moment, while looking at the medal.

I'm not sure if they're repowering old mutants. Just creating new ones.

Apocalypse is returning in Uncanny X-Force though, so it might happen there.

Yep. The Clan Akkaba as well. New group of Horsemen. They're trying to bring about a new Age of Apocalypse.

Oh yeah and Apocalypse is going to be a 10 year old.

Ok, you had me really really excited until that last sentence. I... what?
Then again I suppose it has been established that he uses host bodies and such. And he is a shape shifter. But yeah... now I want to know if he knows he's Apocalypse or if he's like the anti-christ in Good Omens. :P

I wonder if the Horsemen will have powers that actually fit with the names or not.

I actually didn't know about that last detail until yesterday, I wasn't paying much attention to this book.

I just hope some of his other former Horsemen show up. Wolverine and Archangel are on X-Force. Gambit, Polaris and Sunfire should deal with this too.

A few months ago Rick Remender gave a couple of interviews describing what this new book would be about. This Newsarama interview mentions the 10 year old stuff.

I find it odd that he both says "10-year-old boy who will become Apocalypse" and stuff that's Apocalypse is smart, evil and has planned stuff. So maybe at first Apocalypse doesn't know who he is, which will be kind of angsty for the good guys, since he doesn't show signs of badguy-ery. And then Poccy comes back proper and remembers, having planned all this.

I wonder if it's going to even address the whole off into space to serve the celestials bit or just "... and then he woke up in his sarcofagus and all was right with the world"

Gambit should get a shot at him for sure, since his death-stuff is going on right now. And good luck preventing Warren from chopping the kids head off.

Well, we might just have an interesting ride ahead of us.
