Should the writer be joking about something that's quite so close to being painfully derivative, especially as the fans had already noticed?

Though I suppose both could be viewed as being derivative of Tetsujin 28-go/Gigantor

I wouldn't call Sentinel a particularly derivative work because Japan has a whole "kid and his giant robot" genre.

Indeed, which is why I mentioned Tetsujin 28-go/Gigantor as one of the first examples of the genre :)

I think the book is unique enough - and especially well-written enough - stand on its own. =)
