As proof, I offer 6 pages from issue 1 of the New Teen Titans baxter-paper run, penciled and inked by the man himself. Warning to all y'all haters, these scans are Raven-centric, and there's a bigass double-page spread.



During a training session, Jericho has possessed Raven, freaking both of them out. There is fallout. How do you solve a problem like Our Raven?

I love the linework, and the contrasts.

As scary as Trigon was in that shot, all I can think about how withered he looked at the start in Titans, and Linakra's 5-Panel sketch, after all the "Look at my Boobs!"

he doesn't look that scary to me. And honestly I think the extra eyes are one of the ugliest things about him(he's always been more ugly than scary in my opinion) and the way the art is set up it kind of hides them. Especially since he's got the lightning bolts going all around, he just looks like he has a receeding hairline and energy coming from the top of his head.

they have a built in author's saving throw. His entire turn to evil will be undone as soon as someone declared he CAN get rid of the bad parts of people's personalities he absorbed or that he can overcome it, or whatever.

It was so interesting how Raven gradually morphed up to this point with all the temporal wasting and the widow's peak and looking all eeeevilllll and stuff. Not my favorite of his of course, but mighty impressive.

I am a huge Perez fan as well, and as awesome as his Titans work is, my favorites are his work on Wonder Woman and JLA/Avengers. (Although, Avengers was rather good, too.) I loved all of this stuff so much. And I heartily shipped Raven/Jericho, until they turned him evil and made him gay and whatever the hell else they did with him. Woulda been too nicey-nice to actually give the demon's daughter a break, wouldn't it...?

Oh yes, motto to all the above. For me it was either this or Crisis on Infinite Earths, but this one I already had on my hard drive, so.

I tried to resist the Perez masses-o'-people works - Legion of 3 Worlds has some excellent examples as well - in favor of detail work. I'm also fond of his panel layouts, especially in some of his early Marvel work like on the Avengers. Remarkable that even at that early stage, no matter how hacky the ink job, I could pick out a Perez page in nothing flat.

Yes, Perez is great. He's also possibly the single most obsessive artist I know of. Look at that picture of Trigon - most artists would be content to simply draw the giant demon and give him claws, but noooo - HE has to make the claws all chipped and broken, too!

Yes, I love the chipped nails. :D Also, I think he could be given a pass for fuzzing the focus on a character being blasted by an energy beam, but just look at all that sharp detail on Jericho in that panel!

Exactly - the man doesn't know when to stop! Every time you think you've noticed every detail, there's another one that you missed. It must take him hours to finish just one page - I don't know whether that counts as dedication or borderline madness.

With artists, there isn't much of a difference sometimes.

That being said, seeing him on Facebook he comes across as such a fantastically nice guy, cheerfully open about his odd little fetishes and at the same time so obviously completely in love with his wife that it's almost embarrassing to read.

I loved that for his first arc in Avengers he basically designed stunningly fantastic medaevil looks for almost every single Avenger EVER! Knowing full well that the story would be done and dusted in three issues.

My general impression of the really good comic book creators is that they tend to fall into extremes - either they're absolute sweeties or cantankerous sumbitches. (To be fair, sometimes they're both - Alan Moore seems like a fairly nice guy, but if ever there were a textbook example of a cantankerous sumbitch...)

If memory serves, that actually started out as *unintentional* evolution of her design in Perez's art; once Marv Wolfman pointed it out to him, however, the two of them decided to continue it as a plot point, thus taking advantage of the natural changes in Perez's work over two or three years.

Whilst they've pretty much ignored the GOOD parts of people he's possessed; like most of the Titans, Superman, etc etc...

Actually Wolfman and Perez were thinking about it but decided not to because they'd be reinforcing the "artsy sensitive guy= gay" stereotype.

It's one thing they never were an official couple, but it bothers me there's been hardly any mention of their close freindship since the beginning of John's run because you know they gotta make room for definately-not-a-publicity-stunt Gar/Raven
