So in the end of the entire 26 week series, Max gets away with everything and Checkmate is evil again (not that I ever understood so many heroes like Bea or Alan Scott taking sides with even a so-called "reformed" Checkmate, aside from the fact Rucka was writing it so DC made it so). And the "heroes" look like dupes - again.
The real question is - is there ANY DC "event" in the Didio age that hasn't turned out to be just a springboard for yet another series readers have to buy to get the end of the story?
Checkmate's a political organization. It's been good before Max got hold, it's been bad too.
Lesse, Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis were both fairly definitive, weren't they? Maybe 52? (It had Booster Gold following up, but that's more of a sequel story than the end of 52's).
I kept with you through the beginning DC, when the going was slippery and the pathway was unclear. I kept with you when the indecision was high and the plot seemed made-up on the spot. I kept with you through the xenophobic retcon and the killing of a minority member which was both loved and funny. I kept with you until the very end with hopes that my money would help show you what you should do.
I'm happy to see that you took the right choice DC.
AGREED JLI sounds awesome, but this Limited was really bad, and I don't want Winick's hands-of-horrible-writing anywhere near these characters EVER AGAIN.
Now that the mindwipe is reversed and all of the physical evidence of Max's crimes, including the real dialogue between him and Diana before she snapped his neck and the forensic evidence that he shot Ted Kord in the head, can be seen for what it always was, how is he not in jail?
Escaped, pretty much. Dunno why he'd think that anyone would believe his pleas, though, especially given the fact that Captain Atom would be the first to absolve Magog and point the finger back at Max.
I remember in the Manhunter title, Wonder Woman wanted to keep the fact that Max had mind-controlled Superman a secret, but Supes was willing to make it public in order to help her defense. Does anyone recall if that was made public knowledge or not? Because if it is, that would only leverage more 'Max, no one rational is going to believe a damn word you say' pile.
I haven't read the series (and I dislike what I've heard enough so that I have no plans to either) so I don't know if this is addressed - but is there anything to prevent Max from from altering the memories of everyone on the flipping planet again?
I mean seriously, controlling Superman was bad enough, but that power to affect everyone on Earth is just ridiculous.
In fact, I'd say a lot of the stories I hate about DC in the past 5-10 years have involved various icky mind control/brainwashing scenarios. These include the mind wipes revealed in Identity Crisis, the Power Girl stories at the start of JSA Classified, Catwoman having been mind wiped (and then Zatanna being brought in to do it again in Gotham City Sirens), Max controlling Superman, and now Max altering everyone's memories.
Max says earlier in the series that the worldwide mindwipe was a one time thing. It took so much out of him and required direct blood transfusion during it, that he says that doing it again would kill him.
Not to say he wasn't lying, or that he wouldn't find anything worth himself dying to implant in the world's mind.
I've bought and read every issue of this book and just spoilered myself here because I didn't make it from work to my LCS before it shut. And I am fucking crying with the awesome. Thanks, DC. Properly.
Even though I enjoyed this title written by Winick, I actually don't want him writing it. The Ice retcon was a major misstep and honestly... I really just want him writing a Jason Todd ongoing and concentrating on that. And he's great at the Batfamily, maybe they can take Tony Daniel off Batman and put him on that, or let him write Green Arrow again because Krul's GA is awful (when is he going to get out of the fucking forest? When is Mia going to come back? Where's Connor?) I picked up GA today and was like oh, hey maybe he's fighting Ents? But then I was like it's not, but if it was, it would be a LOT better than whatever this is.
I am SOOOOO psyched for the JLI series. Yesyesyes please. Besides the core heroes, I'd like to see Bruce, Wally (it's not like he's been doing anything lately) and Karen join up. And the Ghost Dibneys and one of the Marvels.
Well, it's not like Bruce can say "A lot of dark things came out of the Iron Age, but the JLI was one of the fun things from that era, and deserves a revival."

On the plus side maybe now it won't show up in every other comic.

And it REALLY better not be written by Winick.
