Secret Six #33 - Heaven and Hell

Hi ho, 2 pages from Secret Six #33 here. You'll recall that when a preview page was posted showing Catman's reunion with his d-bag of a father in Hell, Papa Blake begged Tom to save him from a mysterious "she" who comes to torture him afresh every day. Betting on who the "she" is was pretty evenly split between Mama Blake and the lioness Papa Blake killed.









In other news, I continue to desire a Catman plushie doll. :D

That first page. Second panel. I mentally remove most of the text to end up with: "The Urine. IT'S FRESH EVERY TIME!!" I chuckle constantly.

I know that the grammar conjures images for our more... exotic ... scans_daily tastes, but it should really conjure fresh imagenings of abomination. She shreds him, digests him and defecates him. And he is aware and feels EVERY part of the process.

Ranks up there in my mind as that other terrible fate in hell "I'm going to use you as a rubber. Forever".

Re-reading that, I found myself thinking that when Papa Blake was talking about urine he didn't mean hers-- he meant *his*.

He keeps pissing himself in terror. He *never* gets not-scared. And for a macho shithead like he was supposed be, being so scared he pisses himself like an infant has got to be profoundly humiliating.

Also, for some reason I find Mom's feline lick-kiss of her son's hand weirdly adorable.

I truly don't get the idea of hell as some thing related to justice. Take this man who gets tortured daily, I don't know him, but he doesn't seems like a good person, and I understand he did evil things. Even then, is there not any limit to his punishment?. Is there not a point where what he gets subjected to in torture, surpasses what he ever done to others. If there a Creator/God in the DC universe is his morale is really sick.

Ehhhh... That's kind of how Hell is meant to work.

Admittedly there are things like how at the end of the world those who are genuinely sorry will be allowed out, but generally it's just meant to be torture repeated until the victim is more bored stupid than in agony.

I know it's just a story, but I'm just not a fan of the concept of Hell. Hell-like dimensions where demon-like beings live, I'm fine with. Hell as a place for the punishment of sinners, I don't buy. I just can't suspend my disbelief that far, and it takes me out of the story.

Actually, the DC hell is nicer and less arbitrary than the traditional Christian Hell it's based on. Here, there are ways to get out of Hell legitimately, even ways for the demons to be redeemed. In the original, it's all torture all the time, forever.

The DCU Hell has stated many times that the tortures which people suffer there are inflicted on themselves BY themselves, rather than by any particular deity getting their rocks off to it. The demons help and exploit it, but they utilise guilt and self-loathing to do it.

Yeah, I'm a Unitarian Universalist, and I believe in universal salvation--there is no hell/nobody goes to hell, everyone goes to heaven. A universe where this happened would have huge theological implications for me--pretty sure I would never want to live there, too.

But, holy crap, J. Califiore's art is so flat and bland. He could have made her look awesome, but this is just so boring. The expression on her face is so "sameface", he draws EVERY woman AND man with that same face!

He also drew her with the wrong kind of cats' eyes (the bigger cats' pupils are circular), but that's surprisingly common.

While awesome, I also find this kind of sad.

Getting to chew up (and crap out) your abusive murdering douche-bag husband in the arferlife? Sweet.

But indulging in said revenge FOREVER? I hope not. If that's her choice, she's basically decided to squander her eternity on hatred and anger, as opposed to finding peace or becoming one with the universe or whatever.

I can just be her own mom being all like, "Where's my darling daughter? Why doesn't she ever visit me in heaven?" And then Zauriel or someone would have to tell her, "Sorry, she said she'd rather spend all her time eating and then shitting out the soul of the man who murdered her."

Or maybe she does spend part of her time in real heaven, where she's waiting for Crap!Reese to reconstitute himself? Still, I'd have to hope that eventually Thomas's mom would move beyond this sort of thing, at least for her own sake.

I dunno, getting to be a lioness all day sounds kinda cool. By the sounds of it, she doesn't spend all her time eating him, so she can go do lion stuff in her off hours.

Yikes. The mother/son reunion skeeves me out a little, but I think that's the point. Great character moment for Catman, though - not many people get parental closure in the depths of Hell. Would love to see that referenced later on, maybe in a date or something:

"So what do your parents do for a living? 8D"
"Well, they're both in Hell, and my mom's locked in an eternal cycle of mauling, devouring and excreting my father, but they do okay. Yours?"
"....."

I have to Echo the sentimate that i'm glad he's getting what he deserved, but sad she didn't one day move past it.

Still, thats the insidiousness of hell- it traps people in a loop of their own shame, guilt, hatred, and desires. The demons just try to prevent you from redeeming yourself with love, grace, and forgiveness (as seen when Harley visits hell and almost free's a bounty hunter)
