Given the hyper-processed nature of the... sorry, I can't even bring myself to refer to them as "foodstuffs" with a straight face (how about "not actively toxic materials"?) I doubt they can ever actually "die" in any traditional sense.
Honey needs to be stored properly for that to be the case, though if it IS kept intact then yes that's true. It's ability to do that might be seen as the result of efficient evolution.
Stuff that is manually created by a profit-seeking corporate entity shouldn't get the same pass IMHO.
Bankruptcy is a classic method of avoiding compacts and agreements with employees. Corporations do it all the time. They just cranked up the salaries of everyone on top, said they were running out of money, blamed it on unions asking them to pay decent human wages to their workers, and now they can skip out, and either sell the company for even more money, move manufacturing overseas, whatever. Twinkies will live on. It's the people who actually make them who'll be losing their jobs.
Sara Lee and Dean Metropoulos & Co.(owners of Pabst Blue Ribbon and Chef Boyardee) are both reported to be interested in aquiring Hostess. So Twinkies may not be dead yet.
Of course, being a Little Debbie man, the potential loss of Wonder Bread is of far greater import to me.
I was mildly amused to discover, while grocery shopping today, that Mrs. Freshley's (a dollar-store brand that has the dubious distinction of being even cheaper and more plastic-y than Little Debbie) has already put together and distributed cardboard displays for their "Dreamies" rip-off product. The Mexican bakery conglomerate Bimbo also has Twinkie knock-offs in cool flavors like strawberry and coconut. I actually recommend the strawberry ones.
Basically, any company that can make sponge cake and white filling can sell a Twinkie-like product. And I hope they do, because my hubby has had a twinkie-per-day habit since growing up in the 1960s.
