Obviously if you're not aware of the new status quo with Spidey, this will spoil it for you.
So Dr. Octopus has effectively defeated and replaced Spider-Man via a mindswap.

Ock!Spidey later visits one of his old labs, only to find out that it's calibrated specifically to Ock's original body. An Octopus-robot comes out and attacks him and basically fighting himself from his old enemy's perspective, Otto realizes that was effectively a failure in how he was always beaten by Spider-Man. His will, intellect and power was never enough.

As he suits up in his new outfit, Otto declares that he's seen his mistakes through Peter's eyes and now things are going to change.

(Though speaking of emotion, morally ambivalent confidence looked good on Octo-Pete in this..)

Date: 2013-01-04 02:22 am (UTC)Seriously though, this isn't terrible, I was annoyed by the first spread but seeing that the rest of the issue seems to be about subverting that idea I'm not too upset by it. I still hate the idea and don't plan on buying anything related to it, but Yost at least seems to be writing it pretty well. However, Ock is remains a far from a sympathetic character, and I wonder how much longer his own self loathing and bizarre drive to prove himself better than a "dead" man will serve as his primary motivation if they actually do plan on making him sympathetic at some point. I'd really prefer to see Avenging Spider-Man not beholden to this status quo, it'd be nice to have a title for people who dislike this direction.
The new costume is okay I think. It does seem like it's trying very hard to be edgy and relevant though, what with the x-treme claws and the ninja boots. It's also really weird to see the costume without the webbing along his arms, it looked weird in the Ultimate Spidey cartoon and it looks weird here too, at least to me. I'm up in the air about the new eyes as well, on the one hand I think they're too rounded and kind of odd looking, but on the other hand I kind of prefer them to the way a lot of artists, the one on these pages included, draw the teardrop eyes as massive. Overall, not bad, I don't love it, but I could see Marvel keeping elements of this look around even after this regrettable story is wrapped.

Date: 2013-01-04 07:52 pm (UTC)It's funny--Yost had an interview about this book on CBR, and he said he felt like the lucky one in this arrangement, because Slott has to do all the heavy lifting and he can just tell some weird/interesting stories putting this character around all these other heroes. He also said the main idea will be Ock realizing that because of this change, he now actually has friends and allies he can rely on, but all of his interactions with these other characters are part of Ock's plan for something...

Date: 2013-01-04 08:32 pm (UTC)This idea could actually make for some good stories so long as they can avoid the general ickiness, and Yost is in the perfect position do just that by focusing more on Ock's interactions with other superheroes instead of Peter's loved ones. At least that's what I assume his remark about Spidey's friends and allies referred to. Still, I really liked that Peter had finally managed to be accepted by other superheroes, so I think I'd be a little saddened to see a series that's just about Ock manipulating them and ruining those relationships, so hopefully it won't play out that way.
I still can't help thinking that Yost would have been initially annoyed that now he can't just write about the real Spider-Man and has to do this weird Spider-Ock thing instead.

Date: 2013-01-04 01:29 pm (UTC)Rape doesn't necessarily have to involve force or violence, rape is sex with a person when you don't consent to have sex with that person. You know Revenge of the Nerds, the scene where a nerd tricks a girl into having sex with him by pretending to be her boyfriend in a costume? That's rape.
Mod Note.

You know, when I told my sister about it, she laughed and laughed, until she realized I wasn't joking. Then she looked horrified.

Date: 2013-01-04 08:58 pm (UTC)It's not a secret that Peter's going to be coming back - probably in about a year or so. Which means this will be a mini-series where Otto will (most likely) gradually become the mask and turn into a genuine hero, as opposed to right now, where he's pretending to be one to prove a point. And of course something will happen and Peter gets back in the saddle. It's inevitable really.
But when that something happens, what becomes of Octavius? He's just a thought pattern right now, floating inside Peter's body, with no original body to go back to. Maybe Peter's personality eventually supplants Otto's, until there's nothing left of the villain - it's the most obvious conclusion that comes to my mind with this set-up. It really makes me worry that while Peter will definitely return at the end of the series, the Doc Ock we know might not.
