cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)

Obviously if you're not aware of the new status quo with Spidey, this will spoil it for you.

So Dr. Octopus has effectively defeated and replaced Spider-Man via a mindswap.

Ock!Spidey later visits one of his old labs, only to find out that it's calibrated specifically to Ock's original body. An Octopus-robot comes out and attacks him and basically fighting himself from his old enemy's perspective, Otto realizes that was effectively a failure in how he was always beaten by Spider-Man. His will, intellect and power was never enough.

As he suits up in his new outfit, Otto declares that he's seen his mistakes through Peter's eyes and now things are going to change.

I will become interested in this the very moment Ock!Peter gets a bowl cut.

Because that needs to happen.

Peter had a motorcycle. Otto/Peter is going prove he's better by getting a unicycle.

" Lens can also be used for emotion! "

That's a design note hard to imagine either of them making..

(Though speaking of emotion, morally ambivalent confidence looked good on Octo-Pete in this..)

"Peter Parker never went far enough. He never had the will and vision to forge a mask that could wink. I mean, even Wade Wilson can make his mask wink, and he's just crazy. I must be better than Wade Wilson, Otto Octavius or Peter Parker. I must have the hammiest mask of any alliterative superperson in history."

So shouldn't Spider-Ock basically end up with something like the Iron Spider outfit? Armor, gadgets, extra arms...it's kind of all there.

Suddenly I'm feeling like Doc Ock is going through a bit of a mid-life crisis, except instead of a new car or trophy girlfriend, he got himself a whole new body.

Hey, when you're a mad scientist, any other showing of a mid-life crisis would be far too pedestrian.

Oh jeez, now I have to clean vomit off of my keyboard. It's all in between the keys and everything.

Seriously though, this isn't terrible, I was annoyed by the first spread but seeing that the rest of the issue seems to be about subverting that idea I'm not too upset by it. I still hate the idea and don't plan on buying anything related to it, but Yost at least seems to be writing it pretty well. However, Ock is remains a far from a sympathetic character, and I wonder how much longer his own self loathing and bizarre drive to prove himself better than a "dead" man will serve as his primary motivation if they actually do plan on making him sympathetic at some point. I'd really prefer to see Avenging Spider-Man not beholden to this status quo, it'd be nice to have a title for people who dislike this direction.

The new costume is okay I think. It does seem like it's trying very hard to be edgy and relevant though, what with the x-treme claws and the ninja boots. It's also really weird to see the costume without the webbing along his arms, it looked weird in the Ultimate Spidey cartoon and it looks weird here too, at least to me. I'm up in the air about the new eyes as well, on the one hand I think they're too rounded and kind of odd looking, but on the other hand I kind of prefer them to the way a lot of artists, the one on these pages included, draw the teardrop eyes as massive. Overall, not bad, I don't love it, but I could see Marvel keeping elements of this look around even after this regrettable story is wrapped.

but Yost at least seems to be writing it pretty well.

It's funny--Yost had an interview about this book on CBR, and he said he felt like the lucky one in this arrangement, because Slott has to do all the heavy lifting and he can just tell some weird/interesting stories putting this character around all these other heroes. He also said the main idea will be Ock realizing that because of this change, he now actually has friends and allies he can rely on, but all of his interactions with these other characters are part of Ock's plan for something...

Huh, that's a really positive view to take of it.
This idea could actually make for some good stories so long as they can avoid the general ickiness, and Yost is in the perfect position do just that by focusing more on Ock's interactions with other superheroes instead of Peter's loved ones. At least that's what I assume his remark about Spidey's friends and allies referred to. Still, I really liked that Peter had finally managed to be accepted by other superheroes, so I think I'd be a little saddened to see a series that's just about Ock manipulating them and ruining those relationships, so hopefully it won't play out that way.
I still can't help thinking that Yost would have been initially annoyed that now he can't just write about the real Spider-Man and has to do this weird Spider-Ock thing instead.

So wait, you actually want him to start raping Mary Jane? That's not funny man, that's not funny in the slightest. Rape is a serious thing that affects many people, and the fact that you would want a character to be raped just makes me feel uncomfortable.

Well this story just sickens me, and what else would it be if Mary Jane and Ock-Peter were to do it? I highly doubt that Mary Jane would want to have sex with Ock knowing that he stole Peter's body, and if Ock were to not tell Mary Jane the truth and have sex with her... then it's RAPE! Rape is not something to joke about lightly. I'm sorry if I come off as offensive, but the implication that a commenter would joke around about something like that makes me sick; or hope to see that makes me sick.

I don't think it's that too deep an end. Doc Oc in Pete's body having sex with Mary Jane would be rape. Specifically, sex under false pretences. How do you think Mary Jane would feel if she found out that the Peter Parker she'd slept with was actually Doctor Octopus?

Yeah, I'm gonna agree that Doc Ock in Pete's body having relations with Mary Jane would be rape by fraud.

There is nothing offhand about it. Unless Octavius were to inform MJ in advance and seek informed consent, the scenario would be well within the parameters of rape by deception, whether legally recognised as such or not.

If you decide to have sex with Bob, but you are actually having sex with John disguised as Bob, that's rape, because you never consented to have sex with John.

Rape doesn't necessarily have to involve force or violence, rape is sex with a person when you don't consent to have sex with that person. You know Revenge of the Nerds, the scene where a nerd tricks a girl into having sex with him by pretending to be her boyfriend in a costume? That's rape.

It took me a long time to realize that was a new costume. With the amount the suit varies from artist to artist, a difference this minimal is barely worth mentioning.

I reeeally dig the art in that double page spread. It's a bold, cleanly crafted breath of fresh air compared to the LOUD, WONKY, and obnoxious shite Humberto Ramos has been producing.
I dig the very minor yet more menace-y mods to the suit. The toe-claw is kind of ew but I like the Tick/chigger looking new back spider. I didn't expect the new lenses to actually emote but okay!

Yeah, too bad this isn't the regular Spider-Man book. ASM must be one of the only instances where a spin-off book constantly has better artwork than the main title. I mean, Avenging Spider-Man's had Joe Mad and Terry Dodson on that awesome little tie-in with Captain Marvel, and Amazing has far too frequently had Ramos. Who isn't bad, IMO, but I just don't think he's ideal for Spider-Man. Just like I wouldn't put, say, Skottie Young on Spider-Man, and yet he's ideal for the Oz books.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Skottie Young do a backup story at some point. He style isn't suited to a superhero ongoing perhaps, but I think his Spidey has a kind of enjoyably creepy look.

Given how messy that handwriting is, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Freaky Friday-Man's design sketches for the lenses are just cut-and-pastes of the actual sketches by whomever designed this terrible costume variant.

mrstatham: (Default)
From: [personal profile] mrstatham
Yes, the terrible costume variant where about the only things changed are lenses and claws and the darker portion of the costume being a slightly darker shade of blue. Honestly, when I first saw this 'variant', I honestly had to look hard to see what was different.

Date: 2013-01-04 02:43 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] captainbellman
That's the thing, part of my complaint is that this isn't really a 'Variant' at all; even some of the more ridiculous Spider-Armours of the last three years have had more original design elements (even if they were hideous ones).

Whereas this...this is just the epitome of 1990s-type redesign. "Strap some metal bits and threatening elements on it and make it a shade darker". What a waste.

You know who I'm really worried about this event? Doctor Octopus.

It's not a secret that Peter's going to be coming back - probably in about a year or so. Which means this will be a mini-series where Otto will (most likely) gradually become the mask and turn into a genuine hero, as opposed to right now, where he's pretending to be one to prove a point. And of course something will happen and Peter gets back in the saddle. It's inevitable really.

But when that something happens, what becomes of Octavius? He's just a thought pattern right now, floating inside Peter's body, with no original body to go back to. Maybe Peter's personality eventually supplants Otto's, until there's nothing left of the villain - it's the most obvious conclusion that comes to my mind with this set-up. It really makes me worry that while Peter will definitely return at the end of the series, the Doc Ock we know might not.
