spiderwoman01cover

"That is a complicated question and the answer will play a big role in the series. Jess doesn't particularly like children. She's made that pretty clear in the past. She hasn't been waiting around for the right guy to settle down and have a family. That's never been part of her plan. All of this is new uncharted ground for her and a big life changing business. It's not a trick or a gimmick. It's a story.
...
I won't get into it here but I very much relate to Jessica's stance on children. There are big, strong, deep-rooted reasons why she never wanted to be a parent. I understand that. I lived that. Then one day everything changed. Jess seemed like the perfect character for this story.
" - Dennis Hopeless

"If you were on board with the new version of Spider-Woman (and why wouldn't you be, as it's the most interesting and relatable take on the character in maybe ever), then you'll be relieved to know this is the same Jessica Drew." - Matt Little, a reviewer for CBR

So Spider-Woman can have a kid but Spider-Man can't? (Obviously one is A-list and the other C-list but you're still talking about one character being more relatable as a mother whereas the other one can't be relatable as a father).

Yep! I feel Jess may be B-list, but off-the-A is the important part.

You answered your own question with "one is A-list and the other C-list." I mean, that's it exactly. One has movie and TV plans around him that would be jeopardized by suddenly appearing "older" and less relatable to some of his core audience, and one does not have any of that going on. But, y'know, then there's Ant-Man.

Yeah, the need to have heroes act out their anger in violence to impolite, but not ill intent comments is getting really outdated.

I'm... struggling to figure out the storytelling rationale behind this series. I guess they're going for a book that's more relatable to women's issues? But jumping her up straight to third trimester without buildup is awkward as fuck and keeping us in the dark about the father just makes it seem like a soap opera.

Also, having a hundred person party on a the tiny-ass roof of an apartment building at night in the middle of the city is a fucking horrible idea.

If Marvel really needed a superhero character who was a mother, I don't see why they couldn't just use Jessica Jones. Remember Jessica Jones? The beloved, critically acclaimed character who's already got a kid built in and, oh yeah, also has a huge Netflix show dropping literally tomorrow. But who am I to tell Marvel how to run their business?

Anyway, the worst thing about this is that that kid is going to be around forever remember, comic book kids never actually age, so Spider-Woman is going to be toting around an infant/toddler in perpetuity now. It's not a status quo that can be easily walked back on.

And honestly, this is one of those times that I'm really conscious of the fact that even though the title stars a woman, it's by the same sort of all male creative team. I'd feel a lot more interested if this were actually coming from a woman's perspective.

Well, Jessica Jones is kind of Bendis's baby, so I can imagine other writers wanting to stay mostly hands-off, out of respect to both him and the story he told. Plus, isn't she retired or something?

True about the kid being around forever, but doesn't that same issue apply to *any* super-character who gets a kid? It's like you're saying they should never have kids, that its inherently oppositional to being the lead of a spandex book.

Once the writers are tired of her having an infant/toddler, he/she will be A) kidnapped, never to be seen again, B) Artificially aged through any one of a hundred methods, C) Retconned into never existing, D) Fostered out to or adopted by someone obscure, E) Killed for the ultimate in dramangst.

Comics are very good at losing babies when they no longer serve a purpose.

One thing I like about indie books. I follow Gold Digger, where they had a kid, bit of a time skip, and then she's just stayed a character.

I would just like to point out right now that when Tony goes over to ask who the father is, Spider-Man's spider-sense is tingling.
.
.
.
So when will Peter get his family back? I'm not asking for an immediate re-retcon, just a little push to undoing OMD, like Mephisto (of all people asking for help), and in the aftermath, Spidey tells off Mephisto claiming to never want to make a deal with him, not now, not ever, (Have panel fade to black)... not again. Seriously, is it THAT hard to undo a single storyline?

Given how long ago OMD was now - nearly ten years, surely? - and the amount of stuff they've built on that story's back, I could actually see it as Marvel having made things difficult for themselves to remove that story.

I'm going to guess Jerry Hunt, Jessica's romantic interest in the first 16 issues of her 1970s series. He is also the father of Jessica's son in the MC2 timeline.

I dunno... In a world with magic robot babies and children who manage to impregnate their own mothers with themselves, let alone lost souls just appearing in wombs waiting to be reborn. Is it really that bad to ask "do you know who the father is"?

Hell that may be the least dickish thing Mr. Stark has done in ages.
