Remember Katarina Armstrong? She was the second Spy Smasher, appearing in Birds of Prey #100-108 (collected in the trades "Blood and Circuits" and "Dead of Winter," for those who are interested).

Katarina returned this week in Final Crisis Aftermath: Escape #3, written by Ivan Brandon and illustrated by Marco Rudy.

Gail, if you're reading this, do you have any plans on using Katarina again? It shouldn't be hard to restore her memory (if it isn't already restored by the end of the series), and it'd make sense that she'd be involved with the Department of Metahuman Affairs where Diana works.

Characters tied to things that spin? How Silver Age retro!

Me neither. Final Crisis was awesome, this is relatively cool and quite intelligent for a spin-off.

However, replace the words "Final Crisis" with "Dark Reign" in the above sentence and you have an accurate statement.

Can't really comment because I don't want to spoil their story, sorry!

But I do really like the character. She's kind of a bitch on wheels, but she
also has a viewpoint and she's a blast to write.

But it does eventually make sense... because right now I am thinking this is like Fear and Loathing and I need to take an Acid Trip.

Only if Cameron's two-timing Manhunter's tech guy. (Incidentally, whatever drugs they've got everyone on here can't be good for the baby.)

Didn't she have an abortion?

From: [identity profile] bluefall.insanejournal.com
No. She was certainly considering it - she didn't quit smoking and literally the last word we ever heard from her on the subject was "who said I'm keeping it" (and there's no sign of a kid in the flashforward issues, not that that means *anything* whatsoever). But the way she talks about Dylan and how badly she needs to find him in that scene, especially the way she talks about the pregnancy, suggests that if she did have Dylan around, she'd consider her options differently, so if he showed back up at some point between then and now she might have reconsidered. Anyway, either way she never actually got one that we saw. It would be fairly standard modern comic, frankly, to have her miscarry as a result of just this sort of event-related shenanigan right when she'd finally decided to keep the kid after all, or whatever.

Hmm. I would like to have seen the story played out. Andreyko seems like he would be a writer who be willing to do a story where there wasn't a timely miscarriage as the solution to a unexpected pregnancy (but didn't Kate have one now that I think of it?).

Oh, damn. That's cool, so long as he doesn't pull a Winick.

Is the Nemesis in this like Simone's or like Heinberg/Picoult/Pfeiffer's?

Nemesis, huh? See, now I'm forming a pairing between Tom Tresser and Katrina?/Katarina? Armstrong, and Diana can go back to wandering in the wilderness for another forty years...

He's so busy going "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" that we haven't seen much of his personality. Every time he blinks the nature of the place he's stuck in seems to change.

Y'know, ALL the Final Crisis follow-ups are rather shit, but this one? This one is shit AND makes no sense what so ever.

Which makes it the truest inheritor of the Final Crisis mantle.

I haven't read it, but the scans here look pretty interesting. What makes you think this one is shit? And besides, what fun is it knowing how everything works early on?

The series so far is like a really bad Prisoner episode. Like the last one. And I say that as a Prisoner fan.

Clearly you need a good dose of the Human Flame!

(Knowing Sturges, there's a 50-50 chance that at some point we'll see the Human Flame burn down a comic book store, complaining that everything in there is written by pretentious hacks.)

You know, it'd be fantastic if half the comments here weren't taking the opportunity to soapbox against FC and its ilk and, oh I don't know, disuss what we're actually looking at?
Seriously guys, come on.

Interesting. So if one of those other options had been landed on, what would have happened? 'Escape' is pretty obvious, but what about 'Panic'? Would SS have gone mad with fear or something?
