Is this another instance of Xavier proving himself untrustworthy?

Far as I'm concerned, this is THE instance of Xavier proving himself untrustworthy. It skeeved me out when I first read these when they came out in the mid-80s; a decade or so later, when Xavier turned into Onslaught, I remember thinking, oh, it's happened again? That seems right.

What happens next is really, really gross.
