When you owes so much to your parents, you just don't put them in the eldery house hell. And if you can't deal with both old and young dependant people, you use condoms.
Or, maybe a professional facility could manage an elderly woman with memory issues better than a single stressed out young man with a full time job two children and an entire secret life as a superhero.
Not all elderly houses are hell, there are plenty of legit ones.
Obviously the ideal solution is to care for your elderly guardians in their own houses. But if there are legitimate reasons to move them (like, say, Alzheimer so severe that they are liable to walk into traffic while you are out working), then a not-quite-ideal solution is better than crashing and burning.
Not all are hellish, and some elders need constant supervision and daily medical care that a layman can't provide.
Shuffling an elder off and away somewhere where you don't have to think about them is irresponsible and cruel, but making the considerable expense to put an elder where they are better off is very responsible, even if it feels like you are abandoning them.
Do you think Peter would -ever- stop visiting Aunt May? I do not.
And Mary Jane knew that Aunt May was part of the deal. I understand that the suit was making Peter a jerk, but leaving because you were unfortunate enough to have kids at the same time as May succumbed to dementia is... ...not the coolest.
Unfortunately they all carry the stigma of being bad. A lot of TV shows also further that stigma by portraying the person that wants to put their elderly parents in a home as a bad person.
Having been there myself, oh yes you do put them in a senior care center, especially when it's plainly evident that they can't take care of themselves properly. It's an awful, terrible decision to have to make, but if the most important thing is to ensure their safety and comfort, you find the best place possible and do it.
Sorry. Very stressful and painful time of my life, so I still get intense about it.
I work at a senior living facility and it's far from hellish. We have a memory care facility for residents who need to have someone there to care for them at all hours. Many people can't afford or manage to maintain that level of care. That's actually what responsible people do, they make sure their loved ones have the care they need whether they can provide it themselves or not.
