Of course, they both have the issue of how one bad day or mental illness can make you violent, but it can't make you a criminal mastermind that's brilliant with chemicals (Necessary for his signature weapon and other things he comes up with). I thought the 1989 movie worked all that out best. He was a master criminal with an aptitude for art and chemistry going in, and the chemicals made him nuts. Everything covered.
