"I think there's a perception that the Avengers are the (small A) authority in the Marvel Universe, the ones who come down on your favorite characters when they're doing their thing (something I'm as guilty of as anyone). I wanted to re-center what expectations should be for this run of Avengers and what we want to do: the Avengers are saving lives, dealing with problems that are too big for anyone else to take on. I'm less interested in them hassling the X-Men and more into seeing what it means to put your lives on the line over and over again, because you're the only ones that can."

"Yeah, there are moments for different characters to shine because this is a large team, but you want everyone to be able to do their Claremont stuff, right? So I'm trying to make sure that everyone's getting, if not the focus in every issue, everyone's getting some focus as we go on. So in X-Men #4, we've got some good Juggernaut stuff and we've got some good Magik stuff."

"[Editor] Tom Brevoort and I went back and forth on a lineup, but settled pretty early on with what I would call an iconic lineup of Avengers, something I wanted to reflect the classic stories of the Avengers while acknowledging the modern conception of what the Avengers are and should be. While, of course, maintaining a manageable roster size – with too many characters, you're going to get into issues where some members aren't getting enough spotlight, that kind of thing. "
