It was Catrin after the end of #4, tucked into herself in the Underbrush she'd followed her ex-Life Partner Rhion into.

She opened her eyes, in her apartment in grey.

Her phone, which Rhion'd been created from and fled, rang.

" Heh.. hello? "

" Goodbye, Catrin. " said Rhion.

Tears sprang to Catrin's eyes. )

She'd reached out to her, and been rejected - so she'd struck her.

She sat alone, snow falling outside and advisory shadow by her inside.

The shade whispered around her while she huddled inside herself.

Catrin was self-justification, and the shadow was an honest echo. )

#2, which'd been her life after her Life Partner (created from her phone, a feature offered by her service provider) Rhion'd left her, had ended with her seemingly meeting Rhion again out on a dancefloor.

" Who.. are you? " Catrin'd asked, in the other's arms.

That other'd leaned in, smiling into her ear.

The answer was whispered, under the music and dancing around them. )

#1'd been her relationship with Rhion (her Life Partner, created from her phone, tailored to her to be her own) and their separation.

#2 opened on her spending a day with herself.

The day after that, she went out.

She was hungry. )

Issue #1 opened on a relationship of hers being terminated by the other party.

Left alone with herself, she turned to her phone and its Life-Partner-Operating-System.

She went through the flow of creating a Life Partner for herself, answering question after question.

" My hand is full of hours. Do you take it every hour, or do you sometimes let it rest? "

She answered unhesitatingly. )

The sword was leadership of one of Laurelwood's factions.

Aleph'd already heard the sales pitches of two of them - those who wanted the town of the future back to what it was, and those who maintained it.

This third, would-be destroyers of the whole town, interested them as little.

Aleph took the sword and drew a line around themselves. )

(Test #2'd led up to them being presented with it.)

They who gave themselves as subject to every bleeding-edge experiment they could were now part of Laurelwood, a corporate test-bed for the technologies of the future.

They were taken back to the hotel they were staying at.

There, they climbed into the case they'd brought along and talked things over with their friend Mary.

A knock on the door interrupted them. )

Test #1'd been the protagonist entering that town.

They, Aleph Null, were out of the clutches of repo men and in those of locals.

The latter took them out the back door, to a house, and through a hole in the wall.

The hole led to an ambulatory pocket dimension. )

They're Aleph Null, and they're going somewhere.

They're catching rides, avoiding pursuers.

They walked into a cornfield.

A van pulled up behind them. Men came out. )

This is a very, very difficult comic to promote without giving the game away about at least one major plot point, but I would thoroughly recommend it.

Ted Anderson, the writer, describes it thus “Moth & Whisper is a cyberpunk thriller set in a near-future dystopian city where the cars are self-driving and the skies are filled with facial-recognition drones. Corporate employees live in well-defended enclaves that might as well be private fiefdoms. Anonymity is impossible; privacy is a thing of the past.”

But of course, in any such society theere are those who seek to subvert it, and that's what this series seems to be about.

I will also note that Niki, the major charatcer in this series is genderqueer, which is strongly hinted at in this first issue, but after reaching out to the writer (and then seeing some of the promo material), is confirmed as being the case; "I'm excited for readers to meet Niki; they're a complex character in a tough situation, navigating a hostile world using their wits, their skills, and a variety of high-tech gadgets. When your face is just another commodity to be bought and sold, the most dangerous person is the one wearing a mask,"

When identity is more than a metaphor )
