This is from Superman #679-680. It's written by  James Robinson and  illustrated by Renato Guedes.

At the end of #679, Atlas (working with someone later to be revealed as Sam Lane) has challenged and defeated Superman.








Before you go any further, you should read the first few pages of Krypto's battle with Atlas over here.




The energy hitting Krypto is something that weakens Kryptonians.







Superman runs off and gets Zachary Zatara to give him some magical protection, and then he returns and finishes off Atlas. Everyone starts cheering for him.

with Superman, at least you can get motivation. You can get characterization. But with a dog, not so much.

Yeah, no. Animals have motivations and in fiction can have characterizations.
