The Mighty Valkyries #1-#3
Jul. 2nd, 2021 08:01 amThe Mighty Valkyries is made of three parallel storylines. In one, Loki seeks Jane's help with eluding their grandchild, two souls in one wolf shapeshifter calling themselves More. In another, new old Valyrie Rune breaks Kvasir, an oracle who brought up her dead lover, from his otherworldly imprisonment. In yet another, queen of the Norns Karmilla wants children and makes a bargain with More to get them. I deeply enjoy both the beautiful artwork as well as thematic and metaphorical richness and depth of the comic, which I consider to be the author's best in his career. Fourteen pages out of seventy.

Wonder Girl #1
Jul. 2nd, 2021 08:35 amI didn't like Yara Flor as Wonder Woman. I still don't really like her as Wonder Girl, but Joelle Jones builds an amazing rich and breathtakingly beautiful world around her, making me determined to see the series to its end. In the opening pages we see a dream Yara is having while flying from the US to Brazil, revealing some of her repressed childhood memories. I also simply love scheming women, and on this field the story more than delivers.

The Nice House on the Lake #1

"Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter-well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter’s always been a little…off. But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter’s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It’s beautiful, it’s opulent, it’s private-so a week of putting up with Walter’s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not? All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn’t a chance to reconnect be…nice?" -- DC Comics

The Immortal Hulk #47 - "Chaotic Terrain"

I like that [the Black Panther]’s several steps ahead of everyone, that he’s the most capable hero in the Marvel pantheon. There’s room in him for humanity – he has the room to be wrong sometimes, which is important in a character – but he is absolutely the smartest person in any room he’s in, and he’ll always have that twist up his sleeve that will surprise you. And that’s something I probably got from the wonderful Christopher Priest run of the 2000s, which redefined the character by taking him seriously. -- Al Ewing
