Dec. 7th, 2017 07:40 pmstubbleupdateIF you have a friend who has watched and enjoyed Thor Ragnarok and wants an accessible and fun set of stories about Lord of Thunder, you might not choose the current Marvel series. An unworthy, one-armed Odinson and a years long war of the realms does not make a series new-reader friendly. You could try the original Journey into Mystery stories, but they are a bit exhausting to read. The Simonson run will be prominently displayed in all good bookstores, but that's also a long story to commit to.
And if you don't have a friend who enjoyed Thor Ragnarok, you should get one.
The only answer must be Thor The Mighty Avenger by Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee. It was released to little fanfare in 2013, but it's bloody brilliant. It has more of the humour of the original Thor film, but comes with a huge amount of heart.
It covers Thor's banishment from to Midgard, where is alone and a bit confused. Each issue is a standalone adventure with different guest stars. Towards the end of its run it starts to build a multi-issue story arc, but that is where it was cancelled and not completed.

Charles Vess' Warriors Three

Recent discussions of the DC reboot and the event some think is at the root of it (the long-term decline of sales since the implosion of the 90's comics-as-investment market) got me nostalgic for when I was most a purchaser of comics: the period of about 1982-1992 when publishers like Comico and Eclipse and First popped up and pushed Marvel and DC out of their comfort zone. As it happens I've been meaning to clean out the walk-in closet where I know I've got something like twenty boxes of comics and I've got a brand-new scanner here, so I thought I'd share some of the little gems I come across.
So far I've only found one box (I have a lot of crap in the closet), but it contained some fun items. I thought I'd start with a story from Marvel Fanfare #13, publication date March 1984. Now I know exactly why I bought this comic -- it would have been around 1986 and I was a big fan of both George Perez and Art Adams. The lead story was by the former, part of a continuing Black Widow story, while the cover was the latter (and, as far as I can tell from Wikipedia, was his first professionally published work). Still am a fan of both, actually, but at that time the local comic shop had Charles Vess in to sign things and this issue was among the books they had out for sale if one were interested in an autograph -- he had drawn the backup story. I figured what the heck and ponied up, since I'd at least have the Adams and Perez work. I didn't know who Vess was at the time, and I'm still kind of lukewarm about the Warriors Three, but I do know they get a lot of love around this community. And in the years since 1986 I've come to love Charles Vess with the passion of a thousand burning suns. He's one of the folks who turned me on to Art Nouveau illustration, examples of which now decorate my place of residence in all their glory.

baihuJust watched it (yeah I know it was available in March). It was enjoyable, yet kinda weird. It didn't feel like Marvel's Thor universe at all to be honest. I thought it was going to be an animated version of the Son of Asgard comic series; it had some design similarities, but it isn't based on it at all.
Post gets kind of spoilery in the middle so it'll be behind a cut. So don't click it if you don't want to know anything!
There's some issues I have with the plot and nitpicky with some of the production value, but really I watched it because there's a teen!Loki in it ;D
( This show has THE most well-adjusted and HAPPY Loki I have ever seen )
So overall, can I recommend it? It's a fun diversion of the Marvel Thor universe, but not one that can be placed in any of the continuities (guess you can say some kind of weird version of the Asgardians before one of the other Ragnaroks). I would like to see a continuation of this movie with better production values and where they can focus on the more adult-oriented way with the script, because there's potential there.
But you're not missing anything if you don't watch it. It's kind of like a good bit of fanfiction.
For added fun, imagine events in the entire movie as a giant metaphor about penis sizes. Because it can totally work as that.

baihuBeen going a little crazy on anything Loki related since the Thor movie; I just got the animated Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers and it's pretty cool with the animated comic book look, and the voice-acting is pretty solid.
But I also spotted this and even though I don't really like the Ben 10 art style, I gotta admit, can't...keep...eyes...off...teenage-Loki...must...resist...the snarky prettiness...
Now I can't wait for kid-Loki to grow up, but I bet he'll be even more estrogen bait!Cute Caramon and Raistlin thing the two brothers have got going there. And it's pretty funny in hindsight that Loki's pranking on his own son.
( And doesn't Loki look sort of...familiar... )
( An exceptionally non sequitur comic for legality )
