They, the punk who'd learned how to be Batman from Bruce Wayne and the punk who'd learned how to do magic from John Constantine, fell into themselves from the end of issue #3.

A Talon of the Court of Owls self-constituted Batman, a mystery from Gotham's history, harried them downwards alongside gravity.

Terry's fall took him first through the death of his father and the regret of his mother.

His reliving was obviously unreal. )

Issue #2'd revealed their Tomb to Terry McGinnis and Kyle the cat (who knows magic).

Terry was under Gotham searching for children who'd gone missing - Kyle was along because Terry'd enlisted his aid.

Above them, Terry's ally Gestalt called in about the other problems facing them - geographical instabilities and the acquisitions of corporate tech-jerk Donovan Lumos.

They were worried. )

Issue #1'd ended on him appearing in the sewers of Gotham - attacking Terry McGinnis, who'd come down in search of disappeared children from above.

Croc carried Terry off - Terry managed to escape his grip.

He appealed to Croc - to Waylon Jones, grown in size and narrowed in focus.

It didn't work. )

That story'd killed off old Bruce Wayne and set Terry McGinnis to wage his own battle against the killer, Gotham City - its systems come to life as the AI " Living Gotham " - over a year.

He and allies had won that fight. The sequel's after that - without the temporal element (which was only " progression of time " detail), but with a threat of similar scope.

Neo-Gothic #1 opens teasing it in Gotham's depths, where children paid a cat money to be admitted into a garden green and fruiting.

There was narration - the narrator not on the page and not yet named.

The narrator was teaching. )

The conclusion's compressed without being unsatisfying - there are some beats that seem like they should've had more than a page or a panel, but they aren't lacking without that elaboration.

Issue #5 ended on Terry, allied with Gotham cop Beam Boonma and Gotham criminals Gestalt, readying himself to fight their common enemy.

In #6, he went to recruit another - retired Gotham police commissioner Barbara Gordon.

(Terry's volte-facing from his " She feels like she's done - I can't involve her in this " attitude in #1.)

She received him in conspicuous shadow. )

The dark is the Batcave under Wayne Manor, where he took Gotham cop Beam Boonma after issue #4.

The Living Gotham, the super-AI that was that city's systems incarnate, had turned Beam into its Sword to wield against Batman. Terry'd freed her from weaponhood, necessarily injuring her in doing so.

He sought shelter in the remains of the place he'd self-destructed against Gotham - and found Gestalt from #2, also using the cave as shelter from Gotham.

Terry asked them again for help, this time for a single person: " This isn't about me.

" It's about her. "

They answered. )

The Living Gotham had set its human weapon on him at the end of issue #3.

The two of them fought within the trap set by the incarnate aggregate of Gotham's systems, shining blade against fading man.

Terry managed to keep his end of the fight up with what he'd learned from Bruce.

That training helped against the Sword's sword. )

It's to mark the retirement she said she'd take in issue #1.

Her attendance was a necessity of PR that she bore. Terry's attendance was the necessity of his fight against the cyber-superintelligence running Gotham for itself - after #2, he wasn't any further along in that than he'd been before.

He was still working alone, and he still needed information - so again, he faked his way into a party where the powerful gathered.

He wore his suit from the previous occasion. )

He'd been cautious already in issue #1, but the antagonistic superintelligence born in the greater cyber-system of Gotham had still aimed an agent his way.

That Sword had struck to " keep the line flat " - had taken lives to balance ones Terry'd saved, and intended him to be among the dead.

The blow was a near-center hit to the target - people died, but Terry wasn't among them.

He was in the rubble, and then he was climbing out. )

The Batman Beyond story in that anthology issue'd set up the premise: " Gotham's systems develop a singular sentience that decides to excise Batman. Bruce Wayne is consequently killed - Terry McGinnis goes forth alone, against the Living Gotham. "

Neo-Year #1 reiterated that in its first couple pages, efficiently getting readers who hadn't read that previous story up to speed. It then just as efficiently went through the first sixty days of Terry vs. Gotham.

The fight was one hero versus a criminal landscape, the latter's dynamics now more directed than emergent.

Terry gave a good account of himself. )

It opened on Bruce Wayne dead - Bruce Wayne having died of someone " overloading [his] pacemaker ".

He'd told that to Terry McGinnis, who'd found him in the Batcave.

Terry remembered those amongst Bruce's other dying words as he worked to figure out what'd happened.

His mind ran through the past as he reviewed present enemies. )

"I think every artist sort of wants Blade Runner and I've done it a few times in my career with Tokyo Ghost, and a few other sci-fi books I'm sure I did. Drawing traditional Gotham is great for the last two volumes but I was really looking forward to drawing sort of Blade Runner Batman Beyond, sort of Neo-Gotham. So for me, it was mostly about setting and the possibility of Bruce going out there alone and not having any idea of what this new city is. It's like a new planet for him. I also wanted to sort of dive a little bit into how Gotham was able to advance so quickly, and with the idea that Bruce gave everything away, and donated to charity, and created all these funds for the city and whatnot, that it kind of seemed a little plausible that a city infused with a billion-dollar fortune could make these sort of changes within a 10 year period. But I love the idea of Bruce wandering into a city alone not knowing exactly where everything is anymore." -- Sean Patrick Murphy
