My pick for Awesome New Female Character Week is Ramona Flowers, the mysterious Amazon.ca delivery girl from Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series. Ramona travels through the subspace dimension to deliver packages and is never seen without her subspace suitcase (storage capacity: unknown). Both are put to good use when Ramona's Fourth Evil Ex, Roxie Richter, shows up and wants to cut Ramona's boyfriend's head off. A fight ensues! On rollerskates.

7 pages from the fourth volume, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together.

In part 1 Tim travelled to Paris to study with the Rahul Lama, met a girl called Ling, and ended up rescuing Clyde Rawlins from Ling's gang, the Ghost Dragons.

Shadowland in general is pretty hit-or-miss. It's pulling some pretty nifty characters out of relative obscurity and putting them in a prominent place, like the Shroud, Silver Sable, and Shang-Chi. It's also putting Misty and Colleen back on the map and quietly abandoning Misty's Afro That Ate New York, which only works when Khari Evans is drawing her.

On the other hand, Colleen's Daughters of the Shadow miniseries is a lazy collection of anime cliches, the main book has really inconsistent art, and then there's the whole issue of Possessed Ninja-Master Daredevil. As a crossover, it's nicely inobtrusive; as a story, it's got issues.

The bright spot in the whole thing, though, is Shadowland: Power Man, a four-issue limited series by Fred Van Lente and Mahmud Asrar. The concept in a nutshell: there's a guy in Spanish Harlem using the Power Man name and the "hero for hire" gimmick, and Luke, Danny, and the Hand would all like to know why.

You don't need to follow Shadowland to read this book, and it is in many ways a direct sequel to Luke's solo book from the '70s. It really reminds me of Dwayne McDuffie writing Static, and I mean that in the best way possible.

four pages from issue #1, six pages from issue #2 )

...that Pride and Prejudice is one of the more adapted, aped and otherwise adopted texts in our great cultural library. I mean, there's Lost in Austen, Bridget Jones' Diary, The BBC Adaptation (bought it in Zavvi's firesale. Might watch it sometime), there's Bride and Prejudice, there's I Love You Because, there's Armstrong and Miller's take on it, etc etc.

Of course, the fact that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a novel adaptation with the insertion of a Zombie subplot should be as Bill as the hills, but it was also made into a graphic novel. For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn? )
Reading it is... slow progress. But then, I always find that reading Austen is like pushing a really full shopping trolley - it's an almighty push to get started, but once you do build up momentum it's difficult to stop.

Has anybody else picked it up?

Another post for Awesome New Female Characters Week - Introducing Spider-girl Araña, created by Fiona Avery.

Anya Corazon, is the half Mexican and half Puerto Rican 15 year old seconded by the super secret Spider Society (try saying that three times fast) to act as their agent in the fight against the evil Sisterhood of the Wasp. And despite this daft origin, she has risen above it to be awesome all over the place and shortly in her own (probably soon to be canceled) solo series.

6 and a bit pages from Amazing Fantasy #6.

In which Anya has something to say about legacy costumes. )
