They can try. But given their failure at making Cyclops a true villian and Emma's unexpected(at least to Marvel editorial) popularity boost after Death of X I wouldn't be surprised if her popularity hit Cyke, Logan, Storm, and Magneto levels after IvX.
I don't know, even in this issue they seem to be discussing Cyclops in a very different manner than a year ago.
As this whole thing seemed to start to give the Inhumans a massive push, I wonder if the seeming difficulty of getting them over to that degree is starting to make them rethink if they really want to sacrifice their classic X-Men to make the Inhumans seem like the true heroes here.
I keep hearing that Marvel is trying to make the Inhumans the Big Damn Heroes but...I'm just not seeing that. In both Death of X, in their own titles and here, they really come of as JERKS at best, elitist supermacists at worst. No entirely unreasonable people, mind you, but not nice guys and possibly not good guys.
We've seen them engage in blatant anti-Mutant propaganda. We see them casually saying that they don't HAVE to find a solution to the Terrigen problem, except that sooner or later the mutants are gonna get mad about it again. All of which is correct, but they're not really being portrayed as very sympathetic...they're not being portrayed as the clear good guys, here. Of course, the possibility exists that Marvel editorial THINKS they're doing that, but that's not how I've read any of this material over the last year or so.
They can't seem to come up with a consistent costume for Medusa, it's been constantly changing for years. Sometimes she has the mask, sometimes she has no mask and just a crown or headpiece, sometimes neither.
Preparing for a possibility is one thing, but she's acting like it's a sure thing. And in doing so, she alienated one of her allies and pushed him away.
Honestly I think its the fact she is hiding it from Beast that bothers him more than anything.
Now look I shit on Beast as much as the next X-fan, but I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. I think if Medusa had been honest with him about her stance, rather than just smile and grin as she made plans for war Beast might have been fine.
I say "might have been" because Inhuman contingency plans tend to be extremely....final for those on the receiving ends of them. Maybe he knew it was coming but hearing it actually spoken aloud just made it real about how close all his friends are to getting killed.
They make it a point to evacuate all mutants in the path of the cloud. So I guess the idea, or at least the hope, is that they keep doing so until Beast finds a cure.
I like Magnetos reluctance here. It would be fairly alien to his character to really look for a peaceful solution because he is outgunned. Instead it sounds like he is making an excuse for Emma because he knows Luna and Crystal will be family again eventually.
AvX: Avengers: The Phoenix is killing people, and we want to stop it. X-Men: No, because we want the Phoenix to give more people mutant powers.
IvX: X-Men: The Terrigen Cloud is killing people, and we want to stop it. Inhumans: No, because we want the Terrigen Cloud to give more people Inhuman powers.
I'm not sure it is that clear cut since the x-men are pretty much the Earth experts on the phoenix and know from experience that trying to destroy it ends badly. It is also a cosmic force related to death and rebirth so making the leap that it would possibly save a dying species isn't that far fetched. There was also that early prelude story line that had Cable warning Cyclops that if the Avengers took Hope it would lead to a very bad future. Also Hope had manifested the force before A v X so if it wasn't for the massive idiot and conflict balls on both sides things could have gone a great deal better than they did.
On the other hand the Terrigen is not necessary for the inhumans to live they existed just fine before it was found and could survive without it. It also isn't a sapient cosmic force connected to life itself it is just a chemical cloud that is killing people. There will not potentially be cosmic repercussions for destroying it. The only repercussions would come from the inhumans themselves which is why the situations don't mesh.
Oh, but you forget the crucial difference: the Terrigen Cloud doesn't have a habit of blowing up planets and suns, so it doesn't pose a direct threat to the 7 billion baseline human lives the X-Men were handwaving away the risks to in AvX.
Ironically, this talk of how the Mutants (Cyclops in particular) are being unfairly antagonised to glorify the Inhumans just makes me feel that the Inhumans are being antagonised.
How are the Inhumans being antagonised when the Mist is not essential to them staying alive and they continue to protect it despite the fact it is actively killing mutants?
That's what I am waiting on the Phoenix to come swooping in and go "Okay now...I went through ALOT of trouble to bring the Mutants back from extinction and here you lot go and decide to make the frigging planet inhabitable to mutants. So...you condense your little cloud or I erase your entire race from the universe..." "Don't give me that 'The Mists are Sacred!' Sass. What part of 'Cosmic Entity capable of reducing you to atoms' did you not understand?" "Evidently I need to use smaller words...Look up 'Death of Charles Xavier' remember what happened to him? Do want to share his fate?" "*sigh* To heck with this....*Frys the cloud and some Inhumans for good measure*
What I'd like to see here is the Sons of Cyclops putting asides their differences to get some payback. With their older/younger sister.
Maybe get Alex, who is still a bad guy but who loved his brother, to organize it. Cable, Stryfe, and Rachel, sprinkle with Madelyne. Should be enough to open the whupass, especially with a TP paralysis of Black Bolts vocal chords.
Between all the Supers on Earth couldn't one simply bunch the cloud up with, I dunno weather control powers, and contain it in something? Like it was in the Mists room before?
