The Three Caballeros in Comics: Part One

psychopathicus_rexOK, so a little explanation is required here. A few months ago, someone posted a screencap from 'The Three Caballeros', one of my favorite old Disney movies, which I hadn't seen for years. This got me thinking about it again; I re-watched it (and if anything, I like it more now than I did then), and afterwards, as is my habit, did a quick Google search on it.
Well, as it turns out, 'Three Caballeros' also has a foot in the door when it comes to comics. Not a big one - rather a small one, in fact - but a foot. And some of these comics are really quite good. So, having searched them out for my own enjoyment, I am going to share my obsession with you, and see if you agree.
So that being said, who ARE the Caballeros, and what makes them so memorable? Read on, MacDuff!

Contrary to what some might say, madness is not like gravity. It doesn't take "a little push" or "one bad day" to drive a person insane. What I've loved about this Batman strip is that Harvey Dent's road to Two-Face is a long one, spaced out over the course of four storylines so gradually and logically that it's hard to say just when he's crossed the point of no return. This goes for even after the acid hits.

But the story's not over yet. Coming up next, a brand-new, Harvey-free storyline: the origin of Robin! Ain't that always how it goes with friends, Bruce? You win some, you lose some.

glaurungWhisper ran as a 10 page short in "First Adventures" for five issues; issue 5 ran a double installment to wrap up the storyline before the launch of Whisper's new standalone title.
It was in these short installments that Grant started experimenting with a storytelling trick that would become the hallmark of the series: caption boxes that delivered a narrative more or less disconnected from the events occurring in the panels in which they appeared.
Disconnected, but still somehow apropos, in a weird sort of way. Sometimes they were diary entries or letters, other times they were a monologue, but you wouldn't learn who was saying the monologue until several pages in, or even several issues later. ( Posting 20 out of 59 pages )Whisper next appeared in Whisper (vol 2) #1. This time the publisher didn't go belly up, and the series continued for 37 issues. I may post more synopses here if there's interest, but probably not until next week -- winnowing down the pages and writing up the summaries for a plot heavy book like this takes a lot of time.

Cass Cain Counts petition!
Feb. 17th, 2011 08:28 pmbenicio127It’s no secret that Cassandra Cain has had a rough few years. Her layered, dynamic characterisation was brutally mangled and shoddily repaired before she was summarily dismissed, to the point where those closest to her seem to have forgotten she ever existed.
Do you want to let DC know that you’re not all right with this? Do you want to voice your disappointment and discontent?
Myself andshobogan created a petition outlining why Cassandra Cain deserves recognition, the many ways in which she could receive it, and why the lack of it is so appalling. It asks for stability and prominence. It asks for respect. You can sign here. We have 222 signatures so far. And yes, we also address the fact that she will be in a supporting role in Red Robin, but that it is only a supporting role. We are asking that she be given a regular, recurring role.
