Events have consequences that are themselves consequential.
Late in the 13th century, the Swiss Confederacy was formed to protect its member regions' trade routes through the Alpine mountains from others seeking to acquire them. Almost immediately after that, it was confronted by the Habsburgs, whose armies proceeded to aggressively occupy its lands.
In spite of the border blockading those armies imposed, a resistance thrived in the Confederacy. It sought to gather weapons and warriors from abroad. To that end, it needed someone to cross the St. Gotthard pass, to go through the checkpoint there- the one known as Wolfsmund, the Wolf's Maw.
(If that doesn't quite track with history for you, well.. this's been called historical fantasy.)
So it was that a woman called Johanna found herself trying to sneak through with fake identification. She was caught out and captured; she escaped, though, and tried to climb out a window to the other side.
She almost made it.
( If only she hadn't been caught at the moment she was.. )

"East of West is a story about that feeling we're experiencing collectively right now, as a society, that the world is in a bit of a death spiral. The tagline of the book is, "The things that divide us are stronger than the things that unite us." You know, the end times are imminent and we all hate each other too much to come together and solve our problems. Our final destination is imminent, and it is the Apocalypse." - Jonathan Hickman
