In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.
Well, it's been quite a week
The US, UK and France joined forces to launch a heavy missile strike against Syria, as retaliation for President Assad's apparent use of chemical weapons against his own people.
In the UK, Prime Minister May came under heavy criticism for deciding to launch the attack without prior consultation with Parliament (Who have been leery of this approach since the second Gulf War).
Her Government also had to apologise after it was revealed that members of the "Windrush Generation" (post War immigrants and their famlies who came to the UK from the West Indies and Jamaica), were being classified as potential illegal immigrants and deported, despite having lived and worked in the UK since they were children, and being regarded up until now as being British citizens. This was not helped by the fact that the Home Secretary at the time the new rules were drawn up was none other than Theresa May.
POTUS 45 has, at the last moment,
cancelled the planned and ordered further embargoes against Russia, but only after the US ambassador to the US had spent the whole day outlining the impact these would have.Russia itself seems determined to resume it's old role as global bogeyman.
Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has announced he is stepping down from politics at the elections in November, effecitvely retiring at age 48 (though I'm SURE he will follow the proposals he had been pushing to raise the retirement age to 70, by not taking his full pension for another 22 years)
The personal lawyer of POTUS 45, whose offices were raided last week, has had his mysterious third client revealed, and it turns out it's Fox News host and frequent Trump defender Sean Hannity, who has been covering the raid and resulting controversy.... without ever actually mentioning his personal involvement in the matter.
The New York Times and the New Yorker shared the Pulitzer Prize for their expose of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal(s).
The world watch fascinated as Mark Zuckerberg, apparently wearing an uncomfortable human-suit, addressed Congressional hearings about the whole data breach/scraping Facebook issues. Now multibillionaire Mr Zuckerberg has a history of being uncomfortable in social situations, so I have to extend some degree of fellow-feeling for that, and even moreso for the fact he had to spend several excrutiating hours explaining how the Internet worked to a bunch of clueless old people... which is a decent concept of Hell IMHO. It was like "Tech Support for Dad - Boss level"
In positive news,
scientists have, accidentally, discovered an enzyme that breaks down the plastic used in plastic bottles at an incredibly rapid rate!. I think I've seen this movie on SyFy, it doesn't necessarily end well once the enzyme mutates again and starts dissolving ALL plastic in the world!! (See Kit Pedlars 1971 story: "Mutant 59: The Plastic-Eaters")
Beyonce made a hit at CoachellaA long-lost, kerb safety PSA that Adam West (in character as Batman) made when he was visiting London curing the Batman-boom of 1966-67 has been recovered!
