Its inspirations are obvious and it's inspired enough to be more than derivative.

The giant monsters are the extradimensional Tetza, the giant mechs are the made-on-Earth Iron Kings, and the protagonist's one of the pilots of the latter.

Issue #1's her getting a new mech to drive - and a self-constituted rival accosting her over it.

He's archetypical. )

Catwoman and the crew she'd put together for the occasion had got him away from the Orgham family in issue #1079.

She and Jim Gordon had him in the back of a van, speeding towards the Gotham waterfront - forces led by the Orgham retainer Neang following close.

Neang and his men cornered them eventually, demanded the surrender of Batman to them so that they could finish his ritual execution and the formalization of their power over Gotham.

Catwoman refused. Neang made to take the Bat -

- and then a sniper shot downed one of his men.

A coin turned upwards through the air. )

Issue #1078'd been the plan to do so, carried out by the crew she'd recruited.

It'd climaxed in the Orghams being threatened to call off the public hanging of Batman - and their going ahead with it anyway.

#1079 had Batman swinging from a noose in the wind, the Orghams' forces pushing back against Selina's crew, and Catwoman with Prince Arzen and Queen Dariah Orgham.

There were still events to play out. )

Catwoman'd come before that, in issue #1077 - said to him in his cell " We will come for you. "

He had that assurance with him as the Orghams' azmer wracked his psyche, as he was walked out to the gallows, as the Orgham retainer Shavhod addressed the Gotham crowd gathered for " A hanging. "

The eager and the hesitant listened to her explain the execution about to happen.

There was a point beyond sentence on the condemned. )

It's following from the end of issue #1075, which had Batman taken into the custody of the Orghams.

He's chained up in a cell, a demon eating away at his memories - at the Orgham family's mercy, kept to be another instrument of their Gotham-shaping work.

The family's scion, Arzen - the public face of the Orghams - came to the Bat, to Bruce Wayne whom he'd come to consider a friend.

" Only a few hours before you will be walked to your death. "

His words fit the air. )

In issue #1067, representatives of that family'd made their next move in Gotham City - the purchase of land rights in the city's Narrows, the burning of buildings thereon, and the taking of people therein.

Bruce Wayne, hearing about the last two as they were happening, drove off towards the Narrows.

Batman, above the fray of the Narrows, leapt into it. He grappled with the Orgham agents in issue #1068, fought an even enough fight until he was poisoned.

The situation was in the Orghams' favor, then - until Harvey Dent (forcibly pulled into the Orghams' orbit back in issue #1063) gave himself over to Two-Face.

Two-Face made away with Batman. )

Issue #1066 had had Bruce Wayne talking to one of the Orghams of Svatrstal about ideals - and Batman confronting one of the Orghams' operatives, one of the shadows behind their public philanthrophy.

Victor Fries had been a third party in the conflict, someone of interest to the Orghams. He'd exited the scene, setting off devices that froze the other two to the spot.

The Orgham man, Gael Tenclaw the werewolf, was breaking free of the cold with his strength - as Batman was with a device in his belt. Something else surged into their near-the-river stage - running water that drove Gael above ground, that washed Batman away and left him prone.

Victor picked him up and took him away. )

That issue's main story had ended on Batman, having fallen into Gotham's harbor after interfering in the League of Assassins' assassination attempt against a visiting delegation of the royal Orghams of Svatrstal, being pulled out by Jim Gordon and his friend.

Batman awoke in the private detective agency that Jim shared with Harvey Bullock now, unmasked and bandaged up: " Your face is unhurt.. I bandaged it in the dark.. [b]ecause I.. uh.. I didn't want to know. "

He gathered himself together.

Jim went to pour drinks. )

The assassins were the League of - in issue #1064, Talia al Ghul'd distracted Batman from their work.

The assassins' targets, representatives of the Orghams of Svatrstal, took the League in stride in Gotham's harbor.

League assassins led by a bull-masked man swarmed the Orghams' ship.

The bull-man made for the most important of the targets. )

It opens in the past - her training Damian on desert sands.

In the course of their swordplay, she told an old story - of Farhad I Parethes, " grim soldier ".

Of a man who served his gods so well that they grew jealous of his consequent reputation, and set him a " last task " meant to hurt.

He took it on. )

It opens on Bruce Wayne, troubled by disruption in crime's currents and the faltering of his own rhythm in #1062, talking with Harvey Dent in a bar.

Harvey, in a somber mood incongruent with Task Force Z, listened to Bruce's " There's a power vacuum in Gotham and someone new is stepping into it.

" But everywhere I turn, all I hear.. "

Harvey interrupted, his voice also trailing. )

It's the first issue of " Gotham Nocturne ", an arc title underlining the use of " gothic " and " operatic " as descriptors of the story to come.

It has a narrative scope that doesn't make the reader think " Detective Comics is a satellite to Batman, the book, telling stories for the story's sake " - the wringer it's putting Bruce Wayne through is something that would be at home in that other book as well.

It opens with Batman dealing with smugglers in the Gotham docks handily - and then finding a much hardier challenge in " Bruno Maroni.. Sal's nephew.. ", turned into something inhuman and strong.

The fight was interrupted by the transformed Maroni being shot in the head by Talia al Ghul, who then turned and fled Batman's regard.

Batman pursued - but the only thing he caught was Talia's warning: " They're coming and you are not prepared. "

The warning pushed an already-lodged barb deeper into Batman. )

The orderer is Professor Pyg, to whose Asylum Dr. Joy (formerly of Arkham's) and the group in her wake'd been led in #5.

Issue #6 had Dr. Joy " on staff ", observing Pyg's patients in the repurposed slaughterhouse.

Her rounds took her to Dr. Phosphorous and Nocturna.

The former was expounding. The latter was listening. )

The dinner's between Dr. Joy, former doctor of Arkham Asylum, and Dr. Phosphorous and Nocturna - former patients there.

They're having it after the end of issue #4, where the former'd learned something about the " ghost of Amadeus Arkham " that she'd seen for herself in Gotham City.

In Dr. Phosphorous and Nocturna's kitchen, Dr. Joy elaborated on the identity of that ghost.

Her hosts made food and coffee. )

They're away from the ending of #3, and the subsequent events - the half-blinding of the Ten-Eyed Man by Azrael's flaming sword swung into his right hand, and Dr. Joy of Arkham fleeing the scene.

They're living in an apartment, wondering about their neighbors next door.

They knock on their neighbors' door, out of concern for what they've been hearing.

Their neighbors sounded like they needed help. )

Issue #2'd featured the Ten-Eyed Man being guided by his own map, and Azrael following divine leads.

Issue #3 had Dr. Joy, formerly of Arkham, following the Ten-Eyed Man's lead again.

Azrael, meanwhile, was following her as a lead.

He broke into her apartment. )

The mapper is the Ten-Eyed Man, whose way of seeing the world was established in issue #1.

The hunter's Azrael, who's been following God's leads to the demons of Arkham.

The Ten-Eyed Man was in the care of Dr. Joy, from the Asylum the Joker'd gassed - she was thinking that " if I [help] just one of my patients.. it'[ll] all be worth it. "

On a rooftop she'd climbed up to, he told her that his ritual to ward off the " ghost of Arkham " had failed.

" Ten-Eyed Man. Amadeus Arkham is long dead.

" He's not coming to get any of you. That's just a myth.

" The city and the Asylum are distinct things. They aren't the same. "

The Ten-Eyed Man looked at her. )

"Well, I couldn’t create a story that doesn’t have some sort of message, could I? No matter how messed up that story may be?...The underlying current throughout the entire series is friendship and family and how far a person would go for both. Are you loyal even in the most disturbing of situations? Would you sacrifice your life for those you deem friends? As with Plastic, Vinyl is actually a story about love, just not romantic love in this case."

- Doug Wagner
