Greetings, People from Planet Houston. Today I have brought you another chapter of our homage to the late and great Gene Colan. Considering that today is July 4th, I have decided to give you Gene Colan's Captain America. Enjoy.

Power Girl returns to post-Crisis Earth-2, only to notice a few considerable differences. One them involves her long lost best friend, Helena Wayne/Huntress, who doesn't seem well...herself lately.

Don't worry Huntress, Helena Bertinelli would totally understand )

After the disappointment of the new Voltron cartoon (Seriously... could they make it ANY more dull or clichéd, and the animation looks like it's escaped from 1993) this gives me a little hope for the new Thundercats.

Liking the vibe of this more than I thought I would )

So to recap: Spidey learned about the Kingpin's presence in New York and wanted to do something about it. He managed to infiltrate the Kingpin's quarters and stole his security tapes, finding evidence of Fisk murdering one of his underlings and releasing it to the media. Thus, Kingpin fled the country.

Now...he's back.

I first got to know the mighty Gene Colan's work in 1982 through his work on a little horror/super-team mashup book of DC's called Night Force. Looking around all week, alls I could find was #8, a two-story issue with the first half devoted to wrapping up the first long story arc, and the second to launching the next. I've picked out the cover and four pages of the second 12-page story for your perusal.

The Night Force was directed from the shadows by mysterious mystical a-hole Baron Winters, from one of those lovely, spooky manses that seem to crop up in Manhattan specifically to meet the needs of dudes like this. We spend the first few pages getting to know criminal scumbag Paul Brooks, on the run from the flatfoots and dropping innocent bodies in his wake. Meanwhile, Sylvia Conrad is explaining to the Baron the nightmare that life in her formerly lovely brownstone apartment has become, ever since the night she saw a falling star...

I love how Colan's people are all ordinary people in this series, of all ages, races and styles, and they all wear street clothes - well, OK, the Baron wears the Gothic A-hole version of street clothes, but still, nary a hard body or a spandex covered ass in sight.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, in 1997 Marvel did FLASHBACK month, where almost all their issues were set a year (or more) before the rocket flight that created the Fantastic Four. In X-FORCE #-1, John and James Proudstar head to a local carnival. But they aren't the only familiar faces at said carnival.

Dynamite's adaptation of A Game of Thrones is finally coming out, with the first issue solicited for September. This has been in the works for a long time now, since even before the HBO series started. I mean, didn't they first announce the thing back in February or something?

You have to wonder how the fact that there's now already a TV adaptation is going to affect sales for this thing. Will sales be higher because the series is now more popular than ever, or will they be lower because the itch to see the book brought to life in a visual medium has already been scratched by HBO? I could see it going either way.

Also, they've announced Alex Ross as one of the regular cover artists, which makes me wonder what kind of blackmail they have that they can get him to do covers for pretty much every series they put out.

Larger version of the cover and one character sketch by the interior artist 'neath. )
